Do you turn to alcohol when stewing in anger? In its book Living Sober, Alcoholics Anonymous suggests navigating these feelings with exercise, talking the situation through with a trusted friend, getting rest and choosing a “live and let live” mindset instead of drinking. 12. Avoid loneliness.

The basic summary of this book, I would say, is that we associate it [drinking] with something else. Right? So the thing that I've often thought this isn't even in the book, but this is the thing that I've often thought, right? You sit with a pint of lager. Friday night, end of the working week, whatever. You take a sip of beer, either in the sun outside, you take one big swig and go 'Ah. That's better'. Perreault K, Bauman A, Johnson N, Britton A, Rangul V, Stamatakis E. Likewise it is only natural that children should be wary of strangers until they are convinced that person will do them no harm, be it physical or mental. It was nice to learn that my shyness was quite normal and as a result I stopped worrying about it. It also helped me to realize that what I had always assumed to be stand-offishness by other people at social gatherings was really due to their own shyness. By concentrating on helping them to get over their shyness, I become oblivious to my own and get a great pleasure from breaking the ice. At Alcoholics Anonymous, they believe: “we in the fellowship believe there is no such thing as a cure for alcoholism. We can never return to normal drinking”. The implication that alcoholics are generally different to normal drinking is quite astounding when you consider it. It means you are an alcoholic without ever having drunk alcohol. Only you can decide if you have the disease!

This is the enigma of all drug addiction: because we know that we could enjoy social occasions and cope with stress before we got hooked, we sense that alcohol does nothing for us. But because we also know that we cannot enjoy certain occasions without it, we tend to close our minds to the fact. Perhaps all the billions of drinkers in the world are on the same downward slide. Lets look at another one of nature’s ingenious traps to understand it a little more – the Pitcher Plant. The chief effect of alcohol is to deaden you to everything you are going through, and indeed to impair your critical faculties. That is why alcohol seriously compromises your ability to enjoy genuine pleasures. You can start a new, clean and healthy life, and all you need to do is attend an Allen Carr’s Easyway Centre. Lee’s has long had an interest in Buddhism, mindfulness and the possibility of leading a more spiritual life. Food can absorb the alcohol in beverages, so eating before or even while you drink can dampen the effect and may make you want to drink less, says Crews. 9. Make a plan for cravings.

All drug addicts feel uncomfortable in the presence of people who aren’t addicted: they know that what they are doing is stupid and people who aren’t in the same prison remind them of their stupidity. For this reason alone drinking is an anti-social pastime. It creates barriers between drinkers and non-drinkers, at parties and other social functions. Can you picture the fly alighting on the picture plant as the teenager sampling their first shandy? Can you visualise the lager lout just about to throw up, as the bloated fly tries to take off? And when the alcoholic can no longer close his eyes to the fact that his life is being dominated and ruined by drink, doesn’t he try to cut down and control intake, rather like someone who is grossly overweight attempts to cut down food? Alcohol Facts and Statistics . National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Accessed 5/14/2021. months ago, before reading The Easy Way to Control Alcohol we read and reviewed Allen Carr’s “Easy Way To Stop Smoking”. We thought, given it was the start of a new year, we’d read and review his alocohol book in case anyone out there was thinking of stopping or cutting down their alcohol consumption as a 2019 New Year’s Resolution. Of course WE didn’t have a problem with alcohol… or so we though. On the former, I see it every day in my life, my consumption of marketing and entertainment and the area I live in. We are inundated with alcohol related media/advertising, businesses that near or solely exist because of it and the odd social reality that every occasion must involve drinking. When the area you live in proudly opens a new craft brewery every other month, when the plethora of outdoor events and sponsored competitions are always preceded by or concluded with a drink fest - it's not hard to see the heavy and insistent influence and conviction of 'normalcy' in a life filled with alcohol consumption. Firstly, he urges you to not quit drinking, or even cut down, until you reach the end of the book. This is a great tip because even reading about drinking can be very triggering for an alcoholic. This book isn’t about creating willpower within you, it’s about freeing you from even needing willpower. One point Carr regularly makes is that addiction isn’t a disease. This goes against many professional opinions from qualified doctors. He’s speaking from a personal place and doesn’t cite sources. If that isn’t a belief you hold, this might not be the book for you. There are some really good points and new perspectives in this book that I honestly hadn't considered before. Unfortunately they are shadowed by some equally bad logic and absolutely absurd assertions, which makes it hard to trust the author even on the better content.
