About this deal

Like many of Islay’s proud expressions, Big Peat is a bold and unapologetic whisky. Some people may claim that its brash approach does Islay a disservice. However, I would argue that it succeeds in capturing its essence in a single bottle. Actually, it’s a great introduction to the spirit of what the island offers. Starting out with the obvious, Ardbeg’s whiskies are some of the most famous smoky scotch brands in the world. They’re a great place to start if you’re in the nascent stages of peat appreciation. The ten-year-old expression is very pale in colour, with a very classic style of Islay peat on the nose; light flavours at the front palate showing lots of iodine, as is to be expected of peat cut from coastal bogs. Overall, Big Peat offers a salty primary taste with a zesty citrus tartness throughout the opening. This is combined with a succulent and oily mouthfeel and a bracing eucalyptic effect. Big Peat was the first whisky in Douglas Laing’s Remarkable Regional Malts series, which launched in 2009. The idea behind the brand was to offer whisky drinkers the ‘ultimate distillation of Islay’.

We’re currently delivering to the following countries including Australia, China, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand (16 of 17 regions), Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, & United States (20 of 62 states inc Alaska, California, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington DC, & Wyoming). The company blurb below gets into all the pertinent details so I’m gonna cut this section a bit short and let you get on with it in the review below. What this means is that the universally accepted PPM measurement is a good indicator of the presence of peat, but also has a wide range of scope for distillers–not all that dissimilar to the measurement used by brewers to determine the bitterness levels of a delicious beer. Peat’s influence in smoky whiskey is measured in PPM (parts per million), which looks at the prevalence of phenols, moisture, nitrogen content, and the predicted spirit yield of the final run. Malting the barley to a higher ppm can contribute to a much smokier whisky, but the ppm of the raw material is not a trusted measurement of the peat flavour which ultimately ends up in the bottle. Meanwhile, candied fruit marmalade adds an element of zest while a warm malt cereal nose adds a touch of vanilla softness. Additionally, I couldn’t help but notice a touch of woollen lint in there too.

And then, despite having more conventional forms of heat on hand, other places started to replicate this. Peaty scotch whisky is now produced all over the world, with some of the best-peated whiskies faring from places very far from Islay, including India and Japan. How is Peated Whisky Made? If you’re a peat head, and c’mon… you know who you are, then the Big Peat Whisky is for you. It’s a tasty blended malt put out by the Douglas Lang folks. Blended malt meaning there is no grain whisky used in this blend, it’s a 100% malt blend and specifically, it’s a blend of 100% Islay whiskies. Big Peat, our characterful Ileach Fisherman, encapsulates that feisty spirit of Islay with the Caol Ila spirit bringing sweetness, Bowmore the perfect balance, Ardbeg a medicinal, earthy quality and Port Ellen, a real degree of elegance! Our Service is an online platform which provides Members with information (e.g. bottle facts, market-indices, market values and prices) on (mostly) whisky and allows Members to add information to the platform. We do not sell, nor does the Service provide any option to buy, any alcoholic products. Although not overly complex and quite youthful in character, it does have a smooth texture, which is particularly apparent during the heart. To set the rhythm for the palate, its rich candied citrus opening offers marmalade, festive mince pies with a generous dash of sea brine. Palate: Slightly syrupy body. The peat is more evident here, with a lot of earthy/fungal peat and a touch of smolder. Dry, with only a hint of bland simple-syrup for sweetness.
