Stewart, James (2012-01-06). Single Variable Essential Calculus: Early Transcendentals. ISBN 978-1133112785. Peterson, Ivars (August–September 2009). "James Stewart and the House That Calculus Built" (PDF). MAA Focus. 29 (4): 4–6. ISSN 0731-2040 . Retrieved 2009-07-27. Article about Stewart's "Integral House".

Daniel Clegg received his B.A. in Mathematics from California State University, Fullerton and his M.A. in Mathematics from UCLA. He is currently a professor of mathematics at Palomar College near San Diego, California, where he has taught for more than 20 years. Clegg co-authored BRIEF APPLIED CALCULUS with James Stewart and also assisted Stewart with various aspects of his calculus texts and ancillaries for almost 20 years. Every concept is supported by thoughtfully worked examples—many with step-by-step explanations—and carefully chosen exercises. The quality of this pedagogical system is what sets Stewart's texts above others. The late James Stewart received his M.S. from Stanford University and his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. He conducted research at the University of London and was influenced by the famous mathematician George Polya at Stanford University. Dr. Stewart most recently served as a professor of mathematics at McMaster University, and his research focused on harmonic analysis. Dr. Stewart authored a best-selling calculus textbook series, including CALCULUS, CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS and CALCULUS: CONCEPTS AND CONTEXTS as well as a series of successful precalculus texts.Stewart was gay and involved in LGBT activism. According to Joseph Clement, a documentary filmmaker who is working on a film about Stewart and Integral House, Stewart brought gay rights activist George Hislop to speak at McMaster in the early 1970s, when the LGBT liberation movement was in its infancy, and was involved in protests and demonstrations. [2] Death [ edit ] More challenging exercises called "Problems Plus" follow the end-of-chapter exercises. These sections reinforce concepts by requiring students to apply techniques from more than one chapter of the text, and by patiently showing them how to approach a challenging problem.

The Area and Distance Problems. The Definite Integral. Discovery Project: Area Functions. The Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. Indefinite Integrals and the Net Change Theorem. Writing Project: Newton, Leibniz, and the Invention of Calculus. The Substitution Rule. Review. Problems Plus. QUALITY EXERCISES: With over 8000 exercises in all, each exercise set carefully progresses from skill-development problems to more challenging problems involving applications and proofs. Conceptual exercises encourage the development of communication skills by explicitly requesting descriptions, conjectures, and explanations. More challenging “Problems Plus” exercises reinforce concepts by requiring students to apply techniques from more than one chapter of the text, and by patiently showing them how to approach a challenging problem. In the summer of 2013, Stewart was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a blood cancer. [6] He died on December 3, 2014, aged 73. [7] Honours [ edit ] ENGAGING PROJECTS: A wealth of engaging projects reinforce concepts. "Writing Projects" ask students to compare present-day methods with those of the founders of calculus. "Discovery Projects" anticipate results to be discussed later. "Applied Projects" feature real-world use of mathematics. "Laboratory Projects" anticipate results to be discussed later or encourage discovery through pattern recognition.

He worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of London, where his research focused on harmonic and functional analysis. Stewart was most recently Professor of Mathematics at McMaster University, and his research field was harmonic analysis. Stewart was the author of a best calculus textbook series published by Cengage Learning, including Calculus, Calculus: Early Transcendentals and Calculus: Concepts and Contexts, as well as a series of precalculus texts. He received his M. S. (master of science) at Stanford University and his Ph.D. (doctor of philosophy) from the University of Toronto. I have, for the past decade primarily been teaching some variation of Calculus 1 or Pre-Calculus, so I am rather decent with those subjects. While I remembered quite a bit from Integral and Multivariable Calculus, it has been quite some time since I have flexed that muscle and worked problems. I decided to return to an old favorite of a text and got the latest edition of this wonderful tome written by James Stewart.
