Elizabeth Osborne, 20, set fire to her former boss' mow of corn and was later hanged in front of a large crowd on September 6, 1813. Ford was given five life sentences and told he would serve a minimum of 35 years before being considered for parole. The 35 years was later appealed to 27. It's difficult to imagine a discussion of Cornish mysteries without a mention of du Maurier's classic. The story sees a naive young woman marry a wealthy Englishman and follow him home to Manderley, his beautiful estate in Cornwall. Unfortunately, the housekeeper is frighteningly devoted to her husband's late wife, constantly manipulating and undermining the unnamed narrator of the novel. Though it's not a mystery in the traditional sense, it's a haunting and memorable tale. Because of the green shirt this murder was referred to as “The Green Shirt Murder”, or, as time has passed, “The Green Jumper Murder”.

As she's drawn in by her mission, she begins to learn more about herself, the house, and the mystery that still haunts the estate. The volunteer worker who had a history of alcohol and drug abuse and had contracted hepatitis C was last seen alive on June 9 of last year when he took a short train ride from Falmouth to Truro to visit his mother. When he did not show up she reported him missing on June 13 and a search followed. The discovery was made just three days after the brutal slayings of Carol and Graham Fisher at their bungalow near Wadebridge, only a few miles away. All the advice from our profilers was people who kill like this have an offending history. They might be able to go for a while without committing further offences but they won't be able to go indefinitely... where is this person? Are they dead? Are they in prison? I can't believe they are living a normal life. It is a real mystery."

In the case of Finnian, as with all missing people within Devon and Cornwall, they will remain as an active missing person and the investigation will remain open, until a person is either found safe and well or a body is located. For more than a decade, police struggled to comprehend why someone would want to kill a 74-year-old pensioner who lived alone in an isolated bungalow on the outskirts of Delabole.
