About this deal

Previously, the MX500 series maxed out at 2TB capacity but recently Crucial expanded its MX500 family of SSDs with a 4TB capacity which is awesome.

I'm a satisfied customer and can recommend crucial/micron for workstations.To make sure these drives perform at their maximum performance, we will be disabling all the power saving features in the BIOS (C6-state, etc). The testing was done on a fresh install of Windows 10 64-bit with the latest windows updates installed. We disabled a bunch of unnecessary services such as drive indexing, Prefetch, Superfetch, Defrag and removed all the bloatware from Windows 10 to make sure there were as few processes running as possible during the testing. Finally, as we look at bandwidth across our four configurations, we find the leaders all top out around 4GB/s. This is pretty good since if you look at this in terms of shared file storage (or scratch space with RAID0) you could easily saturate a 10Gb or 25Gb LAN connection. Write performance on both HW and SW RAID0 configurations came in around 3.2GB/s, while HW RAID5 dropped to 2GB/s. Software RAID5 took the biggest read and write hit, coming in at under 1GB/s read and 272MB/s write. Again in standard deviation latency in our 4K profile, things are pretty calm across the board, where RAID5 software RAID is the standout. Parity data performance is an area where hardware RAID has had a massive benefit, so if you want to get the most out of your SATA or SAS flash, opting for that hardware RAID card would be a good option. Solid-state drives can be a cost-effective alternative to replacing older servers. While going all Gen4 NVMe might drive some incredible performance, in many environments budgets just don’t exist for that kind of overhaul. While NVMe is taking over, SATA still can provide value. A typical 7200 RPM HDD can deliver read/write speeds of between 80 to 160MB/s compared to SATA SSDs delivering read/write speeds of 200 to 550MB/s. With that said when a Solid State Drive not only gets a new controller, new amount of RAM, but also new NAND… well… call us crazy but we expect it to get a new model. The testing was done on a fresh install of Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (21H1) with all the windows updates and latest drivers installed.Crucial does have the upper hand in price but that's about it. Samsung's 870 EVO SSDs offer much higher write endurance than the MX500 SSDs. In this test, we are using IOMeter which is one of the best application for stress testing the random IO performance of an SSD. IOMeter is set to use 4KB file size chunks and will stress the SSD with random 4 KB files. Since November 2018 the SSD comparison charts have been divided to 2.5” and M.2 models to reduce their growing size. Many people have made inquiries about the charts in the past so once again please do keep in mind that the Charts have the average performance numbers of each drive recorded and not the peak (highest) ones. Also, although every single one of these programs can help potential buyers choose the right drive for their needs you should also remember that from any kind of benchmark up to real world usage the gap is not small (and usually most differences will go unnoticed by most people). All tests were performed in a fresh Windows 10 Pro x64 installation with every update installed up to the date of this review.

Crucial promises sequential transfer speeds of up to 560 MB/s read or 510 MB/s write and relies on the Silicon Motion SM2259H controller, a 3D TLC NAND from its own production as well as a 512 MB DRAM cache for this.
