Xbox 360 and Xbox One systems are known to only work with their own designated portals and cannot use any portals from any other platform at all nor can their portals be used with any other platforms either. This version of the game stores all scanned figures in a database, similarly to the 3DS versions of Swap Force, Trap Team and SuperChargers Racing, allowing them to be played at any time. There are also new Villain Stashes which are the same as Treasure Chests, but only Villains can open them. Like Skylanders, Villains are made up of a certain element. You must use a trap of that same element to capture the Villain. Most portals are interchangeable between consoles, except for Microsoft's Xbox consoles. The Xbox 360 portals of power can only be used on an Xbox 360 console. Xbox One portals of power are likewise only compatible with Xbox One consoles. If you want to play on Xbox 360 or Xbox One consoles, make sure you have a portal of power specifically made to work for your console.

The shape of the platform may be easiest to discern by looking at the figure from underneath. They are larger platforms than the average Skylanders figure has from earlier entries in the franchise.Despite the trap slot of the SuperChargers portal being inaccessible in the modified version, the trap-loading components are still included inside the portal's rift engine.

An important type of Imaginators figure that does not have these platforms is the Creation Crystal, a new figure type introduced with Imaginators, that allows you to create your own Imaginator characters in the game.Ewalt, David M. Many Skylanders refer to the action of being placed on the Portal of Power as "Booming" or "portalling". This also applies to the villains in Trap Team. In Swap Force, the newer portals are still a necessity as these were updated to being able to read more figures at once. With the original portals only being able to read up to 4 figures, which is not enough if one were to use two SWAP Force figures and one Magic Item at the same time.
