About this deal

Harriet Poland, Editorial Director at Coronet, has acquired World rights to Topographia Hibernica and one other book by Blindboyboatclub. Signed copies will also be available. Taking its title from a twelfth-century English manuscript of the same name, which dehumanised the people and culture of Ireland to facilitate domination, Topographia Hibernica is a collection that unravels the knotted threads of humanity, nature and colonisation from a contemporary Irish perspective. He thinks people should be used to the name and plastic bag after over a decade has passed, and they shouldn’t try to find his identity. To his listeners, it doesn’t so much matter what Blindboy is talking about, it’s that the material comes in the form of strange sermons spoken with a sincere and fiery passion. Podcasting has become a saturated game for a twitchy global audience, and so much of it sounds the same. Blindboy has, from the beginning, broadcast from a space and worldview that is entirely his own. He has the skill to present what is usually the result of intense research, sound like a trippy, spontaneous meditation on whatever. Patreon – where the audience can give donations, like alms, or listen for free – has given him a degree of financial stability for the first time in his adult life. A few times, he describes what he does as a “career”. But “vocation” seems a more accurate term for any artist who commits to the highly uncertain life of independent creative output. Experience The Blindboy Podcast LIVE with polymath, author, screenwriter, songwriter, musician, producer and academic Blindboy to mark to release of his highly anticipated book, Topographia Hibernica.

He is also busy on the live circuit, with an appearance alongside Johnny Marr – a hero and, it turned out, an avid Blindboy Podcast listener – the highlights of a sold-out tour of the United Kingdom. All of this makes the phenomenon of Blindboy difficult to pin down. That New York Times profile ran the headline “An Outsider Takes On Ireland, From Inside a Plastic Bag.” The Poitin Maker comments on Irish folklore and its uses historically to cope with life's hardships. An anxious moonshiner blames the death of his family on the fairies and is terrified his living child will be stolen and turned into a changeling. Economically, we are in this strange thing where there is a bang of Celtic Tiger and a bang of recession at the same time — Blindboy Nowadays, Blindboy is most known for his self-titled podcast, covering everything from celebrity interviews to deep personal reflections on his life.I had trained to be a psychotherapist in my early 20s and then my comedy career took off and I left. Chambers was diagnosed with autism in his 30s following comments from Blindboy Podcast listeners. [13] Podcast [ edit ] BP: It’s funny because perhaps the most famous Irish novel ever, Joyce’s Ulysses, is written in an incredibly Irish voice.

Seven years have slipped by since then and Blindboy says he is “no longer in tune” with the mood among the young Irish. He’s reached that iffy in-between land of the late 30s and finds it hard, sometimes, to read what is happening on the streets. I want to go to the middle aisle of Aldi and look for lovely outdoor gear and not have someone beside me going, ‘I saw you on The Late Late Show there last night’.” Blindboy's 'character' Because people believed a white butterfly was the soul of a dead child. Also, you didn’t f**k with bees in ancient Ireland, because people believed that bees belonged to the goddess Bridget. You see this in mythology all over the world. Colonisation eradicates culture – it removes the language and the beliefs. I think mythology exists in the human brain to keep us in line with systems of biodiversity.” These are stories of the strange unsettlings in the souls of men caught in between the past and the possible; stories of heart-blinding rage and disquieting compassion.Described as a “cultural phenomenon” by The New York Times; The Blindboy Podcast is an award-winning, storytelling podcast in the Irish tradition of the Seanchaí which seamlessly intertwines history, fiction, cultural critique and politics into a relaxing form the creator calls “The podcast hug”. If you're young and Irish, this is compulsory reading. If you have any interest in Ireland and its place in the world, this is compulsory reading. No author, teacher, comedian or politician of the 21st century has captured the spirit of Ireland as well as Blindboy has here. Described as a "cultural phenomenon" by The New York Times; The Blindboy Podcast is an award-winning, storytelling podcast in the Irish tradition of the Seanchaí which seamlessly intertwines history, fiction, cultural critique and politics into a relaxing form the creator calls “The podcast hug”. Ireland’s tiny - you can't be famous in Ireland,” he said. “I want to rummage around Aldi, that’s what I want to do.

Blindboy told The Anton Savage Show he adjusts the holes in the bag for his eyes and mouth depending on who he’s talking to. He’s a big believer in therapy and told his listeners late last year that he was returning to visit a psychotherapist, as the tools he had acquired over the years were no longer working for him. In a way, his life is a contradiction: he yearns for quiet anonymity and likes nothing better than to wander the streets for hours, headphones on and mind fizzing. But his strongest urge – to create – means wrestling with a public profile and the word that makes him squirm, “fame”. Other stories, such as "St Augustine's Suntan", a dark look at the (literally) crumbling Catholic church in Ireland and the strange sense of guilt that permeates every Irish Catholic. As you read these stories, you begin to see the threads that connect the themes of this book. Masculinity and its role in the mental health crisis this country experiences, the slow death of our nations enviroment, the post Celtic Tiger greed that covers our emerald green island with a plastic smiling leprechaun - Blindboy sees all the problems in Ireland today and it seems he's the only one who understands them on a deeper level. a b "BBC Three – Blindboy Undestroys the World, The Broken Housing System". bbc.co.uk. BBC. 31 October 2018 . Retrieved 14 June 2020. As a fan of Blindboy and his podcast, it’s surprising to find such scarcity of dialogue in his story collection. He is, after all, a master conversationalist; be it reaching the seriousness, depth and knowledge of the pinched-bottomed puce-faced arts programme contributor, or veering into madcap musing, akin to a drunk realising he has dropped a boiled sweet from his mouth while leaning over his dying granny. No matter, let’s see how this plays out, we might discover something.

It is about biodiversity collapse. My book is about decolonising. Every story contains animals. I’m trying to explore humanity through that.” Yeah, I’m creating certainty, is what I am doing. You’re spot on. All I want to do is write. My podcast is writing as well; that podcast is between 10-15,000 words a week. I don’t just talk into the microphone. I research and write it and I f**king adore doing that. And I want to keep doing that for as long as possible, so you engage in a kind of contract. I can’t turn around to my publisher and say, I’m not doing any press, I’m not going on this. It is a compromise.” Complaints over Rubberbandit's Holy Communion comments rejected". independent.ie.
