About this deal

They needed shoes that were suitable for rough outdoor work and terrain. The Irish word “brog” means a rough or stout shoe. Interestingly this term supposedly originated from the (rather harsh) perception that the Irish spoke as if they had a shoe in their mouths!

Semi-brogues or half brogues are characterised by a straight-edged toe cap with decorative perforations and serration along the cap's edge and includes additional decorative perforations in the centre of the toe cap, called a medallion. The half brogue was first designed and produced by John Lobb Ltd. as an Oxford in the early 1900s when shoes first began to take the place of boots, in an effort to offer customers a shoe more stylish than a plain oxford, yet not as bold as a full brogue. This particular style, which has been copied all over the World, was first created by JOHN LOBB some eighty years ago when shoes first began to take the place of boots. It was designed to meet the demand for a shoe less severe than the plain Oxford yet lighter in style and weight than a fully-brogued shoe. {{ cite web}}: CS1 maint: unfit URL ( link) Technically more formal than a semi-brogue, the quarter brogue is basically a cap toe in which the cap has perforations. There’s no medallion on the toe. Austerity Brogue Though the last few years have been all about wearing running trainers, badminton sneakers and tennis shoes in both formal and more casual contexts, smarter shoes have very much been making a return. In a nutshell: Wingtips often don’t have broguing, and brogues may or may not be arranged in a wingtip pattern.

BROGUE: 1.1 A rough shoe of untanned leather, formerly worn in parts of Ireland and the Scottish Highlands. Historically, brogues have always been stylish. Whatever is in fashion will always change, but an elegant pair of brogues will always be in style. Select brogue shoes with lots of perforations for casual outfits and styles with minimal holes for formal ensembles. The original brogues were rudimentary shoes made with untanned animal hide; their distinctive feature was a series of perforations and serrations (broguing) of each piece of leather that was used in their construction. The purpose of these perforations was to allow water to drain from the shoes. Ghillie brogues were originally quite rudimentary shoes. We like to call this a “wingtip” because there’s technically no broguing. This is simply a shoe on whose toe there’s stitching arranged in the shape of a bird’s wings. Blind Brogue The brogue was once considered an outdoor shoe and not acceptable for formal occasions, but has since evolved to include a variety of different styles that are now acceptable on most formal occasions. Although the classic brogue is a brown leather design, there are now multiple colors, styles, and materials available, including patent leather and suede. The versatility of the shoe means that it can suit various outfits, including everything from slim blue jeans and simple T-shirts to chambray shirts and chinos. These days the classic brogue can even be worn with business attire or a two-piece suit. a b Hall, Joseph Sparkes (1847). The Book of the Feet – A History of Boots and Shoes. p.74-79. Spectator shoes are a variation of brogues that are made in two contrasting colors. Usually, the toe and heel caps and sometimes the lace panels are in a darker color than the main body of the shoe.
