The action of the play, written by Major-General Campbell Christie and his wife Dorothy, is the court-martial of Major Charles "Copper" Carrington, VC (Richard Todd). Jealousy over his war record underlies the accusations made against him by his senior officer, Colonel Henniker, played by Allan Cuthbertson, who created the role in the original stage production and also in the 1955 film version which starred David Niven in the lead. Dorothy Tutin is the WRAC officer, Captain Alison Graham, who gives evidence for Carrington.

The telephonist's testimony (if heard at the court-martial) would have provided evidence that Valerie was lying under oath. This one is admittedly a bit stiff, but then again, it is British, and a military courtroom drama. It sits firmly in the middle of Niven's career but seems curiously, and sadly, unknown. I remember it from my childhood, but caught it again today forlornly filling up a gap in a minor TV channels schedule. It deserves better. **The following may contain spoilers** This article's plot summary may be too long or excessively detailed. Shane Warne's children reveal they believe the legend 'might still be with us today' if he'd taken one...All the regular soldiers at the base are near-unanimous that it is an unfair decision. One of them, Owen ( Victor Maddern), was a sergeant demoted when loyalty to Carrington resulted in his failure to co-operate with the investigation. His defiance in and out of court on the subject results in his demotion again to a mere private. In her evidence, Valerie also perjures herself, denying her husband ever mentioned telling Colonel Henniker he planned to take the money. Carrington produces a letter she wrote to him in which she does mention his argument with Henniker. Carrington intends to only read the parts relevant to his defence, since the letter also contains embarrassing matters about the couple and Valerie's health. But when the judge insists that he and the other officials read it before it is submitted into evidence, Carrington tears it up.
