About this deal

A third tip (which I am sometimes now very good at following), is to use cold water when you condition. I hate this bit because I love a hot shower but I have to admit that my curls always come out much better with cold water. It was first introduced by the founder of the famous Devachan Salons and curly hair expert, Lorraine Massey in her 2011 book, Curly Girl The Handbook. I expect Lorraine Massey never intended her helpful method to be taken to the extremes that it has! Yes, gentler handling and care of naturally curly and textured hair is something we certainly support, but remember this was written more than 20 years ago – we’ve come a long way since,” says Claire Shread, co-founder of Umberto Giannini.

Microfibre towels: use a cotton t-shirt or microfibre towel to dry your hair or wrap it up for plopping.

what is the curly girl method?

Ultimately, your hair has different needs to someone else’s – it’s affected by everything from chemical processes to age. While younger curls may require minimal extra care but maximum freedom to experiment, hair can get more challenging over time – something the original Curly Girl Handbook perhaps overlooked in 2001. Do not brush your hair except when wet and only with a wide-tooth comb or simply your fingers (this is what I do).

Having curly hair used to mean having to road-test a lot of different products and to do a trial-and-error approach to find the best for your specific type of curl. However, with the CGM, you only need a few basic products—you can adjust and add in according to your curl type and hair concern.

Chances are, you’ve been shampooing, conditioning, towel and blow-drying, combing and brushing your hair for years and can hardly imagine a hair care routine that doesn’t involve these seemingly crucial elements. The Curly Girl Method is a way to improve and enhance your curls using only natural products that don’t contain sulphates, alcohol or silicone. You’d think that knowing how to treat your hair should come to you naturally, but depending on your hair type, this is not always the case.

Shampoo (WHAT!? Don’t freak—you just can’t use traditional drying shampoos, but you can use sulfate-free shampoos . More on this below) It really can be a minefield but if you experiment and keep at it, you should definitely see results! 🙂 Work your conditioner into your hair, ensuring it is evenly coated. Use warm (not hot!) water to evenly distribute it. If your hair is wavy, rinse it for a few seconds, if it’s curly, you can leave the conditioner in. Coily curls like to be wrapped up for around 15 minutes; this natural form of heat will give it a great moisture boost. Rinse completely when done. This is the best time to comb and untangle your hair using your fingers. My hair is a mixture of 2a/2b/2c waves, depending on the day. I have waves that are wavy at the top, straight in the middle and curly at the end sometimes. I suspect this could be damage. I’ve always looked after my hair, but it is dyed with semi-permanent colour. I’ve used sulphate and paraben free products for over a year now and I always use heat protection on my hair whenever blow drying or styling. Trust me when I say, you’ll be wishing you’d adopted this method for your curls a long, long time ago. Hair Types That Can Use The Curly Girl Method UK

Deep Conditioners

I apply gel when dripping wet and then I use an old t-shirt to get rid of excess water. I then apply gel again and start diffusing. So, now that you’ve ditched all your old shampoo brands, what products are you going to use for Curly Girl Method conditioning and/or co-washing?
