About this deal

Boosting ISO to 12800 results in more noise and much more aggressive noise reduction by the camera. Noise is apparent in the shadows (although noise reduction makes it look a little “muddy”) and more artifacts are visible throughout the image. Still, ISO 12800 is very usable in my opinion, especially when down-sampled. ISO 25600, on the other hand, looks too muddy and washed for my taste. ISO Performance at low ISOs (ISO 100-800) – RAW

Here is an illustration of a traditional bayer pattern color filter array compared to the new Fuji color filter array: The Fuji X-M1 is a pretty fast camera that can shoot at 5.6 frames per second, which is just a tad slower than what the X-E1 and the X-Pro1 can do. The good news is that when the camera is shot in burst mode, the memory card write process does not freeze the camera as it did before on the initial firmware releases on the X-Pro1. If you want fast writes, make sure to get a really fast SD card. I used some 45 MB/sec class 10 SD cards and there was definitely noticeable difference between those and SanDisk Extreme Pro 95 MB/sec cards. When shooting in bursts, Fine JPEG images will shoot approximately 14-16 images before the buffer gets full. It then takes approximately 10 seconds for the buffer to clear out and memory writes to complete. If you shoot in RAW, the buffer will fill up at about 12-14 images and takes good 20+ seconds to clear out. These numbers are based on approximate calculations using the fastest SanDisk Extreme Pro SDHC 95 MB/sec cards. Slower cards will take even longer to empty the camera buffer. X-M1 + XC16-50mmF3.5-5.6 OIS @ 17.5mm, ISO 200, 1/1, f/22.0 Both are very clean, but the boosted ISO 100 looks much more overexposed when compared to ISO 200 for some reason. I would avoid using ISO 100 on the X-M1 for this reason. Similar to other X series cameras, the X-M1 is not designed to be a weather-proof camera, and I would not expect it to be. Since other manufacturers like Olympus are pretty successful at making their camera bodies weather resistant, I hope it is a matter of time until Fuji starts doing the same. If you are too worried about shooting in extreme conditions, the Fuji X-M1 is probably not for you. X-M1 + XC16-50mmF3.5-5.6 OIS @ 16mm, ISO 400, 1/1800, f/5.6 The Fujifilm X-M1 produces images of outstanding quality. It recorded noise-free JPEG images at ISO 100 all the way up to 6400, with a little noise at ISO 12800 and more visible noise and slight colour desaturation at the fastest setting of ISO 25600, an amazing performance for a camera with an APS-C sensor. The RAW files were also excellent, with usable images throughout the entire range of ISO 200-6400.

The X-M1 launches with its own kit zoom - the XC 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 OIS. It's Fujifilm's first to be designated XC rather than XF, with the C apparently suggesting 'casual' or 'compact'. It offers a usefully-wider focal length than most kit zooms, and includes optical image stabilization, in a small, lightweight plastic body. Despite this Fujifilm is keen to stress that it considers the lens's optics to be a cut above the average 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 kit zooms typically sold with SLRs and mirrorless cameras. The Fujifilm X-M1's maximum shutter speed is 30 seconds in the Time shutter speed mode, and there's a Bulb mode which allows exposures up to 60 minutes long, which is excellent news if you're seriously interested in night photography. The shot below was taken using a shutter speed of 25 seconds at ISO 200. Geotagging setup, Image transfer (Individual image / Selected multiple images), View & Obtain Images, PC Autosave At ISO 6400 the amount of noise doubles throughout the image and much more shadow details are lost. Interestingly, the JPEG version of ISO 3200 and 6400 shots looks much cleaner in comparison. Also, ISO 12800 in JPEG looks better than ISO 6400 in RAW (due to noise reduction applied on JPEGs), except there is a significant amount of detail loss in the shadows. ISO Performance Summary The X-M1's movie mode is similar to that of the X-E1, with the ability to record 1080/30p video with stereo sound and continuous autofocus. The dedicated movie recording button makes it easy to start taking a video in any shooting mode. While you don't have full manual control when recording videos, the aperture can be adjusted priority to shooting in 'A' or 'M' mode. Video quality is decent, though don't be surprised if moiré or rolling shutter effects make an appearance. Performance and Photo Quality

Even so, with no viewfinder – or option to add one – it falls behind on features to the similarly priced Sony NEX-6 and Panasonic G6. It’s also relatively bulky for a CSC, at 531g with its 16-50mm kit lens. That’s only a fraction lighter than the SLR-styled Panasonic G6. Most other CSCs weigh between 320g and 460g. Helping to keep the image quality high is the new 16-50mm zoom lens. With a plastic mount, slower apertures and no aperture ring, at first glance it seems to be a poor alternative to the 18-55mm f/2.8-4 OIS optic, but its low weight and compact size are better suited to the smaller X-M1. It still offers the added benefit of built-in optical image stabilisation to help keep your images sharp, and most importantly doesn't skimp on image quality, making it a cut above the kit lenses that ship with most interchangeable lens cameras. The out-of-the camera images are a little soft and ideally benefit from some further sharpening in a program like Adobe Photoshop. You can also change the in-camera sharpening level. The X-M1 delivers the same excellent image quality as its big and more expensive brothers. Noise is noticeable only by its almost complete absence throughout the ISO range of 100-25,600, while the Dynamic Range function helps to boost contrast and detail. The new 16-50mm lens is also worthy of mention, as although it has a cheaper build quality, it still offers sharp results throughout the focal range. The X-M1 is certainly right up there with the best APS-C sensor cameras on the market, and some full-frame models too, so if image quality at an affordable price is paramount, the X-M1 certainly fits the bill.
