First new fitness facility on North Campus since the Universiade Pavilion (Butterdome) opened in 1983. The glazing was upgraded from double to triple pane under the Energy Management Program. Open Pawalso provides practical hands on training for staff and volunteers working with our animals and also for prospective pet owners. This is delivered through a structured four level training programme as well as daily grooming and handling. The aim of the programme is to provide our animals with the enrichment, training and social skills they will need to make them more rehomeable and to enable them to successfully settle into life in their new homes. On top of this it also provides practical hands-on training for staff and volunteers and for prospective and existing pet owners, thus educating local communities on responsible pet ownership and training. With Open Pawwe throw away the food bowls! Mealtimes have been the highlight of a dog’s stay in rescue, but meals in bowls are usually consumed within seconds and the pleasure has passed. By feeding a meal in an interactive toy like a Kong, the mealtime takes longer and is more mentally stimulating.Centre is open to UofA students, Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation academic, Recreation Services programming, drop-in, Youth Club/Jr Team, School groups, private lessons, events and competitions. We rely on flight buddies to fly over our animals so this means the animals arrive at an airport where the human air passenger is travelling to. As part of our transportation, we try to bring the animal as close as possible to you. Often up to five animals travel together and it’s not always possible to drop off each at their new homes as these could be from Land’s End to John O’Groats. We will work with you in finding a suitable meeting point from where we would ask your help to meet us and take your new family member home. Open Pawprovides a structured training programme for the dogs, staff and volunteers. It comprises four levels as follows: PAW Centre, inclusive of all new and renovated areas is 17,000 square metres (183,000 square feet). We went on to work with cat behaviourists to develop a feline version of Open Paw, and all of our catteries adopted the Open Paw programme by the end of 2017. What is different with Open Paw?

All our animals are fully vaccinated, microchipped and dewormed and some of them are also already rabies tested which means they are travel ready for the UK. You can find profile of them here:

Within 24 hours we noticed the dogs on the pilot were calmer, the noise level of barking had dropped significantly and the dogs seemed more relaxed. Most of the dogs were clean in their kennels within that time span, although a couple took a few more days to learn. The climbing wall consists of versatile, modular climbing structures that are among the highest in the country Ewan Hunter, Director, said: "We so often minimise the importance of play – for both humans and our dogs. Welcome! You are on the right path to being the recipient of one of the most precious experiences in life – the love and gratitude of an animal! We introduced the Open Paw programme for dogs first as it was much more fully developed and tested than the cat programme. As this was a very new way of working, we ran a pilot in the intake kennels at NAWT’s Watford Centre in July 2015, and then gradually rolled it out to the rehoming kennels at Watford. In Autumn 2015 Cornwall became the next Open Paw centre, with Berkshire and Clacton following in early 2016. The centre offers stimulation and support for dogs as they learn and play in their huge play zone, which is always supervised and helped by our outstanding team of "waggy tail-makers." The PAW Centre is a collaboration between the Students' Union, Graduate Students' Association, the Faculty and the University of Alberta and has been designed to promote and foster the health and well-being of the campus community. Building features On top of this, we save some of the dog’s daily food allowance to put into containers on the front of the kennels in the morning and afternoon. This food is used in Level 1 training which is described below.

Our establishments

Animal Care Staff are spending a lot less time on cleaning and more productive time training the dogs who have responded well. All bar one of the 12 dogs in the pilot were happy to eat out of Kongs and the one that couldn’t was an elderly dog with hardly any teeth!We have now found other alternative feeders that are easier for elderly dogs to use but still provide mental stimulation.
