About this deal

However, an exception might be in the case of tumbling very soft materials such as obsidian, marble, fluorite, and calcite. If you find the right type of sand with the proper particle size it might work. Some people use sand to place a frosted finish on tumbled glass or use it as a pre-grit. Protect adjacent surfaces from splashes and remove any EXTERIOR PREGRIT before drying using warm soapy water as later it will not come off. Do not use on new cement when cement has not fully cured. Do not use when the temperature is below 5 degree C. We have a priority system, to make sure that we treat those areas in greatest need first, as follows: Roads Priority generally, grit bins will not be provided to service a road where it is already a primary gritting route

Simply apply 1 coat using a brush or roller ensuring an even coat and allow to dry 6 hours minimum. only written requests for bins will be considered. These must be supported by local residents and will be considered after a full assessment has been carried out Thoroughly stir before use and ensure application temperature is above +5 degree C and that the surface to be treated is free from dust, release agents and any contaminants that may hinder adhesion. Crossroads and connecting roads, accesses into industrial and residential areas. Residential areas, cul-de-sacs and other unclassified roads. Grit bins are provided for use by local residents at a limited number of locations where there are particular problems with snow and ice - such as steps, steep roads and paths, etc. Please note that:

Gritting, snow clearing and flooding

Most natural sands have round grains shaped-particles. In comparison, silicon carbide grit particles are angular in shape and because of this angular shape, it is much more effective at producing abrasion that smooths and rounds tumbling rough into polished stones. Gritting and/or snow ploughing during normal working hours - 8am to 4.30pm Monday to Thursday and 8am to 1pm Friday. Pre grit if required.

During periods of snow and ice, footpaths will be gritted and cleared during normal working hours. Normally we do not pre grit footpaths. Other classified routes and connecting routes between town centres, and accesses to residential areas. a review of locations for grit bins is carried out each year, taking into account any additional requests from local residents

Using sand with water, or even just water will do some degree of rounding. However, it is a far cry from what you would achieve from a 60/90 silicon carbide. If you wish to test a material’s hardness level, simply place it on a glass plate, add a bit of water, then place another piece of glass over and grind the two pieces of glass together. If the material scratches the glass, then it means it has a hardness level of at least 5. Additionally, you would need around twice the amount of sand as a substitute grit, than if you would use silicon carbide grit.
