About this deal

At 105mm, the lens' longest focal length, performance continues to impress. If you don't require an F2.8 max aperture, the greater zooming capabilities of the FE 24-105mm F4 are a big reason why a photographer may opt for it over Sony's fantastic 24-70mm F2.8 GM and GM II pro zooms. Of course, price is also a factor, but I think the extra 35mm at the long end is very nice. Since this lens didn’t compromise on image quality, image stability, and shooting speed (among its other attributes), I use a two-camera solution if I can get away with it. Due to the general-purpose nature of the Sony SEL24105G, I’ve found that it has been useful on most of my hiking and travel situations. In other words, there is no crop factor like there is with the Canon EOS camera bodies that I’ve used (they have an APS-C sensor). The lens does, obviously, feature an image stabilizer (OSS). We haven't found any official figures about its efficiency, but we'd rate it

As usual, manual focusing works "by-wire". This may not be everybody's taste, but we have no issue with this. A focus hold buttonSome mild longitudinal chromatic aberrations are apparent in limited situations. This shows up mostly with a bit of purple fringing around high-contrast fine details. It's an easy correction, and the overall performance is relatively good here. This basically means that the information conveyed through the lens would be larger than the camera sensor’s area, which essentially leaves out or “crops” the image thereby causing a “zoom” relative to the full size of the image. The Sony SEL24105G FE 24-105mm f/4 OSS G Lens sitting on a postal scale The Sony SEL24105G lens accommodates a large enough zoom range that it allows me to not have to change the lens for the majority of the travel and hiking situations that I’ve faced. I appreciated the full-frame capability of the Sony SEL24105G, which took advantage of the Sony Alpha 7 III’s full frame sensor thereby enabling me to capture the entirety of Bear Creek Falls with some additional detail around it While our Sony Alpha 7 III body also has an In-Body Image Stabilizer (or IBIS), it actually works in conjunction with that of the lens’ OSS feature.

By the way, if you do attach a filter, you’ll want to use a very thin one (I use a B + W XS-PRO MRC nano 77mm circular polarizer filter), which would minimize vignetting (i.e. the dark corners). I'd only turn it off if I was on a very sturdy tripod, and then only if I was making long exposures. Otherwise the stabilizer often can help reduce vibration from the tripod.

This 24-105mm lens is much easier to carry all day and zooms much more easily, makes tighter macro shots, has less flare, adds optical stabilization and zooms 50% longer — and costs half as much. Moreover, it supports the camera’s full-frame capability so the 24-105mm zoom range is the true range. Again, I have no idea why some people get excited about lenses that only go to 70mm; 105mm is far more useful.

G: means Sony's nearly best, but not quite as physically tough as the GM "G Master" lenses — but this lens seems identical mechanically to the 24-70/2.8 GM.

Image quality: Impressive sharpness and good control over aberrations

The 24-70/2.8 GM is more of a showboat lens for people who don't actually use it (or who shoot pro sports and action all day and night), and the 24-240mm is a lighter-duty lens with longer range but less optical performance and durability. So imagine just how much sharper the images would end up being with the stabilization aid of a tripod! Cons In this scheme, the second camera (which is my old Canon EOS 60D mated with a dedicated L-series telephoto lens) handles my wildlife or other distant-subject photography needs. Finally, if I wanted to attach a filter (like a circular polarizer) to the lens, it accepts those with 77mm in diameter. Filters last a lifetime, so you may as well get the best since the Hoya HD3 stays cleaner than the others and will outlast this lens — and maybe you!

This is primarily due to the lens’ high quality construction and engineering that afforded me the flexibility to shoot wide angle landscapes as well as close-ups, which made up over 90% of my shooting situations in both my hikes and travels. Even without RAW postprocessing in Adobe Lightroom, this photo of a beautiful sunset at Trinidad Beach was faithfully captured as I saw it Something that I’ve been quite aware of regarding superzoom lenses like the Sony SEL24240 lens as well as my old Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L IS USM lens is the minimum distance to shoot. The 2.8 is more for sports and action pros who need 2.8 for fast shutter speeds even in the dark, and may appreciate its possibly even faster focussing. For day to day shooting, I prefer this 24-105.Due to its rounded diaphragm blades, this 24-105 makes softer sunstars on brilliant points of light, and only at the smaller apertures.
