This award winning introductory ushers us into the second instalment through 2008’s White Night where the mystery goes on. The story is set in midsummer when the sun never sets, birds sing at midnight and the white night rules. At the Herring House which is a gallery on the beach, Artist Bella Sinclair throws an intricate party to instigate a presentation of her work. DI Jimmy Pérez and his team investigate the murder of a teenage girl whose body was found on a secluded beach, and time and again the same name crops up – that of local recluse Magnus Bain, whose home overlooks the crime scene and who had forged an unlikely friendship with the victim. But then the procurator fiscal draws attention to the unsolved disappearance of a girl named Catriona 19 years previously – a case that shares several similarities with this one. A strange Englishman spoils the fun when he bursts into tears claiming neither to know who he is nor where he comes from. The man is found the following day hanging from a rafter. Detective Jimmy Perez is set in his belief that the man has been murdered. This belief is strengthened when Bella’s musician nephew is also murdered.

During filming, the cast and crew are usually based in Glasgow [16] and other areas of mainland Scotland. [10] [2] Filming often takes place in areas with landscape or buildings reminiscent of those in the Shetland Islands, such as Kilbarchan in Renfrewshire, Barrhead, where Henshall was born and grew up, [17] Ayr and Irvine, North Ayrshire. Then an elderly woman is shot in a tragic accident in the middle of the night. Shetland detective Jimmy Perez is called in by her grandson – his own colleague, Sandy Wilson. On 2 December 2019, BBC One announced that two further series were intended for 2020 and 2021 with Henshall and O’Donnell returning in their roles. [4] Production had to be postponed due to COVID-19. Series 6 broadcast began on 20 October 2021 and series 7 on 10 August 2022. A journalist dies in a suspicious car accident, and when it turns out he was an old friend of Pérez's, a forensic scientist is called in to ensure an objective view of the case. As the team awaits her results, they look into the reasons for the victim's return to the island and find he was chasing a lead about plans for a controversial new gas pipeline. Also starring are Alison O'Donnell as DS Alison "Tosh" McIntosh and Steven Robertson as DC Sandy Wilson. Lewis Howden and Anne Kidd are also principal members of the cast.

How did you find the experience of seeing your series adapted for television? Was there a particular story that you loved seeing come to life on screen? When Jimmy turns to the islanders for a solution, he finds instead two feuding families who for generation have maintained their bitterness, envy and greed. When a young man disappears on a ferry crossing and a small boy ends up in intensive care after overdosing on Ecstasy, Pérez and the team become convinced the two events are connected.
