Since the beginning of time, God’s prophets have urged the people of their day to “hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God, … keep his commandments and his statutes … , [and] turn unto [Him] with all thine heart, and with all thy soul.” 3 Finally, in February 1924, thin, exhausted, and dirty, Bobbie reached Silverton, Oregon, and HOME! He had traveled for six months over 2,500 miles, covering approximately 14 miles a day! Frank, Elizabeth, Leona, and Nova were overjoyed, hugging and kissing Bobbie over and over. They fed him mounds of food and soaked him in warm baths, then covered him in warm blankets. Bobbie’s heart almost burst out of his chest in happiness! He had found his forever family and he was HOME! He slathered them with wet kisses, jumped on their laps, and raced around in happy circles. This was the best feeling in the world! Bobbie knew it then: there’s no place like home and he had found his! The fires and tumults of mortal life may threaten and frighten, but those who incline their hearts to God will be encircled by His peace. Their joy will not be diminished. They will not be abandoned or forgotten. The grave is behind the Oregon Humane Society building, and can only be reached by walking through the building during business hours.

This path would have dragged Bobbie through some of the most remote regions of the western United States, including several national parks and numerous reserved wilderness areas. After several months of cutting across the midwest and travelling the vast distances of the Great Plains, he would have eventually hit the mountain ranges of the Continental Divide during the dead of winter. The Great Divide Decades later, a 70-foot-long mural of his life was painted on a wall facing the busiest street in Silverton. A life-size statue of Bobbie was also erected on one end, and next o the statue is a replica of Bobbie's fancy dog house. Meanwhile, Frank, Elizabeth, Leona, and Nova spent hours searching for Bobbie, too, frantically calling him over and over, walking the streets, and asking if anyone had seen a stray collie. Unfortunately, they had miles yet to travel before reaching their relative’s house and they couldn’t stand by their car all night hoping Bobbie would return. They got into their car and drove away in tears.

Bobbie’s story was featured in Riply’s Believe It or Not, and he eventually starred in his own autobiographical silent film “The Call of the West” (just as canine actors were coming into vogue). Bobbie would go on to sire a litter of 15 puppies – all boys. Estimates of the total distance Bobbie traveled vary significantly. The Sunday Oregonian listed a sum of 2,364 miles, the total initially produced by the Oregonian Humane Society. However, other sources assert that Bobbie’s actual course was not a straightforward one. When you walk the path of discipleship—when you move toward Heavenly Father—there is something within you that will confirm that you have heard the call of the Savior and set your heart toward the light. It will tell you that you are on the right path and that you are returning home.

No matter your position in your community or in the Church, God will use you, if you are willing. The plains did host a variety of wildlife, but catching prey was no easy task.Bobbie would’ve needed to hunt rabbits, hares, and rodents to survive, a far cry from the daily meals provided by his loving family. And let’s not forget the predators.

They had many great traits that allowed them to make significant contributions to the Restoration of the Church of Jesus Christ. But they were also human, weak, and fallible—just as you and I are. Some found themselves at variance with the Prophet Joseph Smith and fell away from the Church. Later, many of the same people had a change of heart, humbled themselves, and once again sought and found fellowship with the Saints.
