The GHD Air wasn’t a loud dryer so we weren’t concerned going into this review, but it’s a nice improvement and brings the level of noise down to Dyson levels.The feel of the Helios is a cut above, too. The plastic shell of the GHD Air feels a little rough to the touch by comparison, and the plastic shell of the Helios feels smoother, silkier – almost like silicone. It also replaces the hard plastic hook by the cable with a soft silicone loop which is attractively branded; the GHD name imprinted on a chrome-plated button. Similar branding appears on the rose gold grille, and even the holes in the filter and the shape of the impeller inside have an industrial beauty to them. Having owned, and used, a GHD Air for at least five years we can categorically say that the GHD Helios is noticeably lighter from the first use. You can instantly tell it’s quieter, too, and its extra power becomes immediately clear as soon as you start using itIf you buy the pink version of this Helios, Platinum Plus or GHD Gold, GHD will donate part of the proceeds to breast cancer charities. Each Helios in the pink collection has the Take Control Now slogan embossed onto the side. We didn’t even have to sacrifice hair quality and shine for this improved speed, either. After every use, our hair was almost frizz-free with only minimal flyaways and we never once had to resort to running straighteners over it to complete the look. Two weeks into testing and our hair definitely feels stronger and we’re seeing fewer breakages and less hair loss in the shower. The GHD Helios weighs 780g (without the plug and cable included in that weight), compared to the GHD Air’s hefty 1.54kg – so half the weight. The Air is the brand’s only other GHD hair dryer that’s still available after the GHD discontinued the GHD Aura. The design of the GHD Helios and GHD Air is remarkably similar, from the location and design of the power, heat and cold shot buttons (a literal copy and paste job from the GHD Air) to the overall shape, the branded grille and the metal that sweeps around the rear of the dryer. This is a minor complaint. Plus, because less heat is needed to dry the hair, it is possible to place the dryer closer to your scalp so it’s less of an issue than it may first seem. It’s worth noting though. Particularly if you have long hair, your arms will start to ache.
