Cappy joins Mario to rescue his little sister Tiara, who had been kidnapped by Bowser along with Princess Peach. He is "energetic but a bit timid." [3] Cappy is also controlled by the second player while playing in co-op mode. Across the nineteenth and early twentieth century, hats were considered high fashion. A casual stroll through the streets of 1920s Paris, or Sheffield, would show that trilbys, fedoras and flat caps were the prevailing style. Mario also adjusts his cap properly in one of his idle poses. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Mario spins and takes his cap off, revealing his hair during his side taunt. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Mario throws his cap and Cappy appears during his new side taunt. Cappy also has a chance of appearing in Mario's Super Jump Punch. In a small deviation from previous games, those treasures are not Power Stars but Power Moons, required to run Mario’s hat-shaped airship – the titular Odyssey – so that he and Cappy can chase after Bowser as he embarks on a weird scavenger hunt in pursuit of the perfect wedding. Travel guide

In Wii Party U, the minigame Mad Hatters involves players choosing different hats from each other's, one of which is the Mario Cap. This small decision has significant consequences, that all lead to this hat. Across the decades since Mario’s introduction, he has worn a variety of hats with special properties. In 1988’s Super Mario Bros. 3 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, the Raccoon (ahem, Tanuki) Cap allowed Mario to take flight. In 1996/97’s Super Mario 64 the Flight Cap granted a similar ability. Moving into the 1950s and 1960s, hats fell from grace[‘s head]; they were seen as a frivolous accessory of the modern world that were especially useless when driving around in posh convertible cars. Cappy also informs the player of various details of the game and the surrounding world, such as regional coins that can only be used in one kingdom.

It appears Mario owns multiple caps, as Mario is also seen wearing one when he is trapped within his painting.Band • Bonneter biologist • Cappy • Coach • Desert Wanderer • Glydon • Goombette • Jammin' Toad • Luigi* • Mario • Pauline • Poochy • Princess Peach • Roving Racers • Shiverian Elder • Shiverian Racer • Sphynx • Style Sisters • Talkatoo • Tiara • Toad Brigade ( Banktoad · Captain Toad · Hint Toad · Mailtoad · Toadette · Yellow Toad) • Uncle amiibo • Yoshi Big Bob-omb • Big Boo • Big Bully • Big Mr. I. • Bowser • Chief Chilly † • Chill Bully • Eyerok • Goomboss † • King Boo † • Piranha Flowers • Whomp King • Wiggler Cappy is the hat worn by Mario, mostly taking on the form of Mario's Cap, but Cappy also appears as Mario's Top Hat and Builder Helmet in Mario's Wedding and Builder alternate costumes, respectively. Cappy's eyes open if Mario performs a side taunt. Cappy also appears as a hat for Mii Fighters to wear.
