About this deal

Where I live in the south west of England, we’ve experienced a range of hostile winter weather so far this year, so it hasn’t been hard to put the Rubino Pros through their paces. In short, the Rubino Pro G2 TLR is the perfect tubeless tyre for all conditions and in all seasons, even winter. It is also suitable as a training tyre, and comes at a very friendly price. No experience with Rubinos, but since Bike Closet was/is selling Corsa G2.0s for cheap I put a pair on my Battaglin, which is built from Columbus MAX tubing and this has a firm ride that generally has me searching for the smoothest line in the bike lane. They make a HUGE difference. It's still a firm ride, but they reduce road chatter to what I'd call "information", rather than discomfort.I'm a huge fan of the Corsa Gs. (Both the earlier G+ and the G2.0.) Used one tubular Rubino 2.0 but flatted it very early on. (Seems I angered the tire god.)

Veloflex tubulars have always been a staple of the lightest, most purposeful climbing bikes. Now, though, you can get them in clincher format and they are tubeless-ready. The 350 threads per inch casing is extraordinarily supple, and these are also perhaps some of the best-looking tyres out there (if aesthetics are important for you), but with low weight and supple cotton comes a corresponding drop in durability. Don't be daft, don't slap these on for the winter. How to choose the best road bike tyres What type of bike tyres are best for the road?Generally speaking, the best road bike tyres are either tubular (glued onto the rim), or clincher (hooked onto the rim sidewalls). In days gone by, tubulars (or 'tubs') were the reserve of pros, while everyone else used clinchers and inner tubes.

Tested in a 700x30 size, the tyre is also available in 25, 28 and 32mm widths (all 700C), all with the same tread design and casing, with a folding bead and for use with tubes, rather than tubeless or tubular. The textured clusters around the shoulders are said to improve grip, much like the full-length texture found on the brand’s four-season style Rubino tyres. Ride quality has been surprisingly good, especially for a 60tpi casings- Though quiet, country roads can be quite variable in terms of surface quality. Some can be washboard; others give the sensation of riding through treacle. Even at 100psi, ours showed surprising compliance-not in magic carpet territory but more supple than some long standing 60tpi favourites with lower operating pressures.NOTE: As of 2021, we've improved the puncture resistance tests and now provide 'Total Puncture Score' as the main puncture resistance indicator. As with tubeless vs tubes there is also a heated debate about which tyres are faster. If you value comfort then go wider, and likewise cornering grip too; bigger tyres naturally have a larger footprint, but can also be run at lower pressures which further improves things in this regard. The Vittoria Rubino Pro G2 consists of 3 different compounds. The use of multiple compounds creates an ideal balance between rolling resistance, grip and durability. The carcass of the Rubino Pro G2 road bike tyre is made of 150 TPI nylon, which makes the carcass slightly stiffer, yet extra durable. The Rubino Pro Graphene 2.0 tyre will give you, therefore, many kilometres of cycling fun. Thanks to outstanding riding characteristics, the fast Rubino Pro road bike tyre that is designed for various weather and road conditions has already gained a lot of respect. The current version comes with an improved rubber compound called GRAPHENE 2.0. In combination with the proven 3C layering process where three separate rubber compounds are used for the centre tread, the Rubino Pro G2.0 particularly sets new standards in comfort, rolling resistance, grip and wear resistance. In addition, the tyre offers excellent puncture resistance through a thin layer of densely woven aramid fibres which provide good protection from splinters, thorns and glass.

Continual exposure to the UK’s hedge-cutting season, heavy rain washout and a host of newly broken road surfaces have so far failed to breach the Zaffiro Pros, or cause any noticeable wear. For this 30mm version the recommended pressure range is 58-100psi, which should suit all preferences. Manhole covers and similarly slippery ironworks require a bit more restraint, dare I say, common sense but no heart-in-mouth, soiled-my-shorts moments to date. If you don’t mind setting up tubeless tyres, opting for the tubeless-ready Rubino Pro TLR might be a smart choice. It’s possible the puncture mentioned above could have been averted by using tubeless sealant. This was a slight disappointment because the Rubino is touted as one of the most durable tyres in Vittoria’s range. However, many tyres would have struggled in these circumstances; that’s the downside of riding on the wintery rural lanes of the UK.

Puncture Force Blunt Needle: The Blunt needle has a flat tip and won't split the casing wires. To puncture the tire, the blunt needle has to cut the casing wires. If you want to maintain a decent tempo, the Zaffiro Pro is up to the task. Naturally, doing so will require more effort than a lighter, faster road bike tyre, but that’s a trade-off I’m happy to accept in return for much-increased reliability.Whether you go tubeless or not is a key decision, but the majority of the best road bike tyres nowadays are tubeless compatible so you have the option to change your mind down the line. Of course, you don’t want that low price to equate to any fragility that could leave you changing a tube by the side of the road. Vittora suggests the Rubino Pro is best for training rides, and all-weather performance. It’s intended to mix speed with durability and grip, and built to handle all-year wear and tear.
