About this deal

The fact that it’s a transparent overdrive means that you’re not going to completely change or mess up your existing setup like a less transparent pedal would. You can easily add it to your pedalboard and it will compliment your tone. Who isn’t it for?

The Electro-Harmonix Soul Food is ideally meant to do one thing: provide guitarists availability to the sought after form of a clean boost as well as overdrive tones which are made known by the Klon Centaur overdrive guitar pedals. It’s meant to simply accomplish this feat while costing about a console video game. This sounds like an excellent food for the soul. Features and controls

If you’re interested in learning about the hype and crazy prices behind the Klon Centaur, read this article. It was pretty easy to play around with the settings and set it up for different uses. For example, if you’re looking to use it to give your clean tone a bit of a boost to drive your valve amp, then keep the DRIVE knob low and adjust the TREBLE and VOL knobs to suit your personal tastes.

Brand new, the Boss BD-2 can be had for around the same price as a brand new EHX Soul Food. There’s always plenty of second-hand BD-2s to be had as well, although it can be very difficult to find one for a bargain price.

To be honest, I was so impressed with the Soul Food that I would recommend it to everyone just based on the price. It’s a great bargain for such a high-quality overdrive pedal. The Soul Food was so popular that EHX created a similar pedal for bassists.

I mentioned earlier that there were two different original types of Klon Centaur pedals – typically known as ‘horsie’ and ‘non-horsie’ (or silver and gold).

Just what the world needs, right? Another overdrive pedal... Well, in the case of the Electro-Harmonix Soul Food the answer might just be a resounding 'yes'. Powered either by a 9V battery or the included 9.6V power supply, the Soul Food is a simple three‑knob overdrive box, sporting the expected Drive, Volume and Treble (tone) knobs. Plugging in a guitar switches on the power. An LED shows when the pedal is active, and there's an internal switch setting for true or buffered bypass. As shipped, the pedal is set to true bypass. All three knobs do pretty much what you'd expect, but with any overdrive pedal it's the fine detail of how these actually work and interact that matters. I was looking for a clean booster, something that did not add coloration to my tone. This little guy does it really good IMHO. One thing, it is interesting how this pedal reacts depending on where it is placed in the daisy chain. I tried to place it after my overdrives but it did not work for me. It was not a bad sound, just a little treble and it did not blend well with one of my overdrives. On the other hand (before overdrives), it gave me a sweet transparent booster (no gain), no coloration and blended well with the others guys. It doesn’t get much easier to use than this. It’s a simple overdrive pedal meant for those who like a simple tone. Overdrive and booster pedals work best with avalve amp so if you own a solid state amp, this may or may not suit your needs. You will know for sure whether this is the right pedal for you by listening to the tone in the video later.

This type of overdrive doesn’t suit all guitarists. I usually prefer a more rounded out tone rather than a bright and sparkly tone. I do enjoy using the Soul Food, but for a lot of what I play, it doesn’t suit my tone needs. If you’re a metal guitarist or any style that doesn’t fit what you hear in the video earlier, then this type of overdrive might not meet your needs. How to get the most out ofthe Soul FoodIf you found this review on the Electro-Harmonix Soul Food both enjoyable and informative. Comment below your own review or any questions you may have regarding this product. This oedal deserves no less than 5 stars for the wuality of tone and the price... sure there are nicer Klones but at least at double the price... it might soubd a little thing conosred to a 2,500 dlls Klon, but you ad an so booster, poom, problem solved.... My personal answer is: no. I don’t care about the hype behind the Klon and I don’t feel you shouldn’t care either. Does it really matter how close the Soul Food replicates the Klon sound? The Soul Food is often called a ‘transparent’ overdrive. If you read the recommendations given in the guide Must Have Guitar Pedals Chosen by Top Bloggers, you will notice the Soul Food recommended and you will see the term transparent overdrive used a few times. The reason many guitarists prefer transparent overdrives is because they allow you to retain the general feel of your tone.
