About this deal

In analog images such as film there is no notion of pixel, nor notion of SAR or PAR, and "aspect ratio" refers unambiguously to DAR. Actual displays do not generally have non-square pixels, though digital sensors might; they are rather a mathematical abstraction used in resampling images to convert between resolutions. is a traditional TV display standard, which means the picture is 4 units of width for every 3 units of height. While the 16:9 (1.78:1) aspect ratio is an HDTV screen standard, which means the picture is 16 units of width for every 9 units of height. And HDTV'S 16:9 is 78% wider than its height, allowing bigger pictures to be viewed when compared to the conventional TVs of 4:3 aspect ratio (learn more about Aspect Ratios in Shotkit's guide).

But something has changed in the last couple of years… We’re seeing a resurgence of the classic 4:3 format, with more filmmakers embracing it on feature length narratives. This is something we haven’t seen on a large scale for ages. Known as APS-H (30.2mm × 16.7mm), with the "-H" denoting "High Definition", the 16:9 format is also the standard image aspect ratio for HDTV. 16:9 is gaining popularity as a format in all classes of consumer still cameras which also shoot High Definition ( HD) video. When still cameras have an HD video capability, some can also record stills in the 16:9 format, ideal for display on HD televisions and widescreen computer displays. It should be noted that 4:3 aspect ratio resolutions specifically refer to screens and monitors — like 16:9 — but it’s frequently used to refer to 1.33/1.37 movies in casual film conversation. Additionally, movies shot on regular 35mm (or even on digital) can be shot and presented in a native 1.33 or 1.37 aspect ratio. Since the 1950s widescreen revolution, most films presented in 1.66 to 1.85 are shot natively in 1.33 and cropped later.

Other uncommon 4:3 aspect ratio resolutions includes: 40x30, 160x120, 256x192, 320x240,384x288, 400x300, 512x384, 832x624, 1152x864, 1400x1050, 1792x1344, 1856x1392, 2304x1728, 2560x1920, 2800x2100, 3200x2400, 4096x3072, 2704x2028, 2720x2040, 2732x2048, 4000x3000, 6400x4800. List of 4:3 Resolutions Non-square pixels arise often in early digital TV standards, related to digitalization of analog TV signals – whose horizontal and vertical resolutions differ and are thus best described by non-square pixels – and also in some digital videocameras and computer display modes, such as Color Graphics Adapter (CGA). Today they arise particularly in transcoding between resolutions with different SARs. American Honey, Son of Saul, and First Reformed are a just a few of the many features that have recently utilized 4:3/1.33 – While the L200P is a larger display and has the desirable 1600 x 1200 resolution, it wasn’t a mainstream unit like the Dells above, so its a challenge to find a good deal on. If you like the IBM styling and branding, you can look into some of their smaller displays that are much more inexpensive, but often have a 5:4 aspect ratio. It’s also worth pointing out that the native resolution pf 1600×1200 is evenly divisible by 240p. Important for crispy-looking retro gaming! This section does not cite any sources. FRAMING. There is plenty of ways to have a good framing on pretty much any aspect ratio. Even for the face. In fact, 16:9 isn’t that much of a difference from 4:3 – all you get is a bit of empty space on both sides of an image. So, really, the face will look about the same way in both frames. Nowak, Arne (October 2010). "Digital Cinema Technologies from the Archive's Perspective" (PDF). International Federation of Film Archives. p.4 . Retrieved May 16, 2016. Another great value from Dell, but it does have a but of a premium in resale over the newer 2007FP model. This 2001FP UltraSharp model from 2003 is also quite popular for retro enthusiasts (especially popular in the Amiga community) and has a solid industrial design. Not only is a generous screen size, have rotation and VESA mounting ability, but it also has a variety of video inputs — especially interesting for retro gamers that aren’t outputting to Component or HDMI elsewhere. There are countless other aesthetic benefits to 4:3 too, not the least of which is how powerful it can be for creating a more boxed-in/claustrophobic look… But we’ll save that for another article. However, before we begin connecting the monitors, it’s best to ensure that the BIOS setting allows us to do so. The aspect ratio of an image is the ratio of its width to its height, and is expressed with two numbers separated by a colon, such as 16:9, sixteen-to-nine. For the x: y aspect ratio, the image is x units wide and y units high. Common aspect ratios are 1.85:1 and 2.39:1 in cinematography, 4:3 and 16:9 in television photography, and 3:2 in still photography.
