About this deal

Hannah is a horrible character. I mean this in two ways. One is that she’s an evil little bitch who I’d really like to punch in the face if she wasn’t dead. Second is that, the way Asher writes her, she’s NOT AT ALL plausible. (At least, not to me.) I can't believe I wasted my time with this.. ANOTHER BIG MOTHER-EFFING DISCLAIMER (cause apparently my first one was not enough)

I'm not anti-suicide and I'm not railing against Hannah for choosing that course. I'm just not down with the 13 tapes vilifying other people for not thinking about how every move they made affected Hannah. I see a hypocritical, self-absorbed teenager who basically refused to take responsibility for herself and/or her OWN actions because she was too busy analyzing OTHER people's actions and how those actions--directly or indirectly--affected Hannah. The findings of this study add to a growing body of information suggesting that youth may be particularly sensitive to the way suicide is portrayed in popular entertainment and in the media. This increasing recognition of entertainment and media influence has led a variety of groups, such as National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention , the World Health Organization, and reporting on suicide.org , to create best practices for talking about and portraying suicide on screen. These guidelines recommend, for example, that the entertainment media should avoid depicting the suicide method used. The entertainment media are also urged to convey the message that help is available and to include accurate information about how people can seek help.

But Hannah’s tone is so angry that there is virtually no variation. She seemed equally as angry at the guy who’d once pronounced that she had a ‘nice ass’ as the peeping tom or the rape-enabler. Maybe that’s plausible for a suicidal girl – that she should feel so bitter and twisted towards everyone. Still, Hannah also has a very didactic narrative voice. I felt as though I was supposed to be Learning A Very Important Lesson, but equally important lessons from the rapist and the guy who said ‘nice ass’? I mean, really? They’re both in the same sport, perhaps – sexual judgment/harassment – but, really, completely different leagues. a b Schnaars, Christopher; McClurg, Jocelyn (January 4, 2018). Although this show has received critical acclaim, it has also generated questions regarding how the show’s portrayal of suicide affects young people who watch it.
