The chilly Baltic Sea may not seem like the most obvious place to skinny dip. But this gorgeous strand on the long, sandy Curonian Spit offers one of Europe’s most picturesque spots to take it all off. Long, wide and blessed with great surf, the beach is reached via the zig-zag Ho Chi Minh Trail from the cliff-top Torrey Pines Gliderport near the University of California, San Diego. Since then, amenities have expanded to include the Hotel El Refugio Nudista Naturista clothing-optional resort.

What has resulted is a popularity spike in nude running. Though it’s not a new concept, the races have been small and hidden for years, limited to the select community that wasn’t afraid to bare it all. Now, in an effort to move toward healthy ideas of body image and self discovery, this underground race circuit is gaining popularity. This year, about 30 races are being offered nationwide, and that doesn’t take into account the growing number offered overseas where the popularity of bare-bodied running has long been practiced. Designer Shruti Sancheti agrees. She says that post pandemic, most people just want to feel free in their own skin. “It’s about fitness and flaunting the body, but it’s also about body positivity. Now there is no stigma attached to wearing something like this. I get many women who come in and they want the sheer pants, which go with a bustier and a sheer blazer,” says Sancheti, adding, “These days, we also find support in the right kind of underwear and inner wear that is available. It makes women feel confident about following this trend.” Their views are reflected in numbers. According to Alexandra Van Houtte, the founder of Tagwalk, a search engine for fashion, who was quoted in a piece online, “there were 333 per cent more low-waist skirts and 78 per cent more low-waist pants on the spring 2023 runways, with more than 15 per cent more visible lingerie and more than 10 per cent more transparent clothing.” Anse de Grande Saline (or Saline Beach) is another self-catering beach. Visitors will need to bring along everything they need for a day at the shore, especially sunscreen, as there is no shade to speak of.

As summer heats up, runners across the nation are cashing in on the newest trend, and stripping down. Technically all of the beaches on Sylt are clothing optional, but Buhne 16 was the first and is still the foremost location for nude sunbathing along the German shore. Part of Makena State Park on the island’s southeast coast, it overlooks a national marine sanctuary renowned for its sea turtles, dolphins, whales and tropical fish.
