It took me a little while to get into, yes, as I found the main character (Zoe) to be...less than endearing. If anything, I worried that I'd not like the book simply because I found her to be overly whiney. Thankfully, that clears up as you really get into the intricacies of what's going on. I have read many Patricia MacDonald books, and there is something she does that I haven't been able to figure out whether it is a positive or a negative or a bit of both.

The degeneration of the cones, which are responsible for central vision, typically comes later on, though how much later depends on the individual patient."
