Yukimura has always been good at balancing the light and the dark, as you can see the aforementioned Ivar, who you keep thinking is going to cause havoc, but you also have everyone else is trying to have a good life in another country. Yukimura wants to show that everyone has a voice and can devote whole chapters to characters that have their own arc, whether it is Thorfinn’s son Karli learns to play with others and not be so self-entitled, or Cordelia struggling to know her place.

Thors advances through Askeladd's men, beating but not killing them, until he faces Bjorn who is in a berserker rage after eating the mushroom. He defeats Bjorn and challenges Askeladd to a duel. After a fierce swordfight, Thors defeats Askeladd, but surrenders to save Thorfinn and his villagers. He is then slain by a volley of arrows. As Thorfinn’s crew set off to Vinland, they make a stop Leif Erikson’s farm to get the remaining resources for their upcoming journey. There is a fun subplot involving Bug-Eyes/Fake Thorfinn who has returned to his home as a disgraced man, after being financially screwed over by a woman whom he planned to marry. The only way Bug-Eyes can redeem himself is by joining Thorfinn’s voyage, where he remains a comic character. While the Vikings are recognized as heroes, Yukimura wanted to explain the harsh realities of their era. Because of the harsh violence he witnessed, Thorfinn was always drawn with a serious facial expression in the first arc and pitied himself for his sins in the following arc. As a result, the character of Thorkell is characterized as more comical, making the battles more enjoyable to draw. Yukimura was often told by his editors not to draw Canute with a beard, as they claimed its interference with the bishonen archetype he represented would diminish the series' popularity. He rejected that idea, claiming that every man had a beard in that era. As Askeladd and his men cross northern Mercia, they are caught in early winter snows. Cold and hungry, they come across a village of Christians and pillage it, taking all of their food. They kill the villagers so that no-one can reveal their location. The only survivor is a young woman who was in the woods outside the village seeking penitence because of a cheap ring she had stolen at a fair. This volume continues with the writer's wish to go against the fans that want to see action and pushes even further into slowly building up on the main theme the writer wants to discuss, which is the meaning of a true warrior and how does one create a society without violence.
