The original Action Man was based on a real soldier in the British army and came complete with a scar on his cheek.Action Man is the iconic British boy's toy of the 1960s and 70s. He was designed and produced in Coalville, Leics. by Palitoy Ltd. However he was based on a toy, GI Joe, produced by the USA company Hasbro and many of his parts were manufactured in the Far East. He exemplifies the move towards a globally based system of mass production in the 1960s. Hasbro Interactive published the Windows game Action Man: Raid on Island X in the United States as a tie-in to the TV series, despite having nothing to do with it. Action Man was an animated series that aired from 1995-1997. It was produced by Mainframe Entertainment and originally aired in syndication. The show follows the adventures of the 'Action Man,' a soldier whose real name is Ian Noble. He and his team of international agents, known as the Action Force, fight against the evil organization, Venom, headed by the villainous Doctor X. The team travels the world to stop Venom's nefarious plans, using high-tech gadgets and vehicles to help them along the way. The Council of Doom continues to grow after Brandon was saved from Dr. X. The season features new villains: Gangrene & Quake. In 2001, the show won a Golden Camera Award at the U.S. and International Film and Video Festival for 'Best Animation' in the episode "The Swarm: Part 2". The new Action Men ar best described as 'My first Action Man' as he is firmly targeted at a new generation of kids (age 3+). Coined as Kids Action Man or 'KAM' there are two distinct product lines:He isn't wearing a British uniform. The basic 60s Action Man came with a very basic American GI uniform, and that's what this one is wearing, without his cap. The basic Action Man, without optional accessories, didn't even have a helmet. All the uniforms were American, and your basic Action Man came as Army, Navy or Air Force, but all were American uniforms. And all the accessories were American too. Only in the late 60s did Palitoy produce a range of uniforms, to be bought as accessories, of different WWII armies. The animation in the show is top-notch, with fluid movement and detailed character designs. The action sequences are particularly impressive, with lots of explosions, fights, and intense moments that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats. The cinematography is also noteworthy, with dynamic camera angles and interesting shot compositions that make every scene visually stimulating. Colchester Collections' exhibit within Colchester Castle's Museum, Essex showcased part of Rob Wisdom's vintage Action Man Collection. As a postscript, although Palitoy ceased production of Action Man in the early 1980s and indeed went out of business in 1986, Hasbro went on to produce Action Man, based on the British idea!

Note: This episode was dedicated to the memory of Todd Halford, who was a co-worker and friend of the crew of the show that died before the episode aired. Good news for adults collectors is that a much more advanced and articulated range is being develop and will follow in line sure to be popular with collectors in 2019.
