Aqua regia dissolves gold, although neither constituent acid will do so alone. Nitric acid is a powerful oxidizer, which will actually dissolve a virtually undetectable amount of gold, forming gold(III) ions ( Au 3+). The hydrochloric acid provides a ready supply of chloride ions ( Cl −), which react with the gold ions to produce tetrachloroaurate(III) anions ( [AuCl 4] −), also in solution. The reaction with hydrochloric acid is an equilibrium reaction that favors formation of tetrachloroaurate(III) anions. This results in a removal of gold ions from solution and allows further oxidation of gold to take place. The gold dissolves to become chloroauric acid. Wash down surfaces previously exposed to salt water using Aquamarine Aquawash degreaser (or similar alkaline cleaner) ensuring the removal of oil dirt and grease. They are not magic. If you have rust then you have rust. They can claim all they want about these products. Just try welding to a treated rusty area it will still blow out on you. Please do not use this stuff & think it gives you a strong as original area.Remove loose scale, flaky rust, old paint, and dirt with a wire brush. Salt-water deposits must be removed with high-pressure clean water blasting. Reduce any high peaks of rust.
