You'll also receive a Founder's Badge on Steam, designating you always and forever as an early adopter of Betrayal at Calth.

As the magos concentrated on gaining access to Calth's planetary defence system, the Loyalists' fate took a turn for the worst. The forces of the XVII th Legion's Commander Hol Beloth descended upon the guildhall with a vengeance. He had come to punish the hated Ultramarines with a force of Traitor Titans, the Word Bearers' Terminator-armoured Cataphractii and the dreaded daemon-possessed Astartes of the Gal Vorbak. The crux of the campaign came on the Agri-world of Calth in the Ultramar Sector, where the Ultramarines successfully broke the Word Bearers' surprise assault after a viciously-fought siege action, though at the cost of terrible casualties and the complete destruction of Calth's atmosphere and once-verdant biosphere. The Ushmetar Kaul, "The Brotherhood of the Knife" - Largest and most effective of the warp cults deployed by the Word Bearers to Calth. The cult force was, it appears, organised into between 10-20 sub-sects, each at least 10,000 strong. Recorded as engaging in the most violent rites before, after and even during battle. During the Great Scouring, the Ultramarines, led by Captain Ventanus, presided over the destruction of the Word Bearers homeworld of Colchis. [2ad] In 999.M41, ten thousand years after the Heresy, Hol Beloth's Dark Apostle, Maloq Kartho, would revisit Ultramar as the Daemon Prince M'kar, though he was unable to set foot on Calth, declaring the world "anathema" to him. [6a] [6b] As a result of the devastation wrought by the Word Bearers during the Calth Atrocity upon the Veridia System's sun, future generations of Calth's people were required to live deep underground in massive subterranean hive cities to escape their world's radiation-scorched, airless surface.

It's been yonks since Rab Florence shared his thoughts on the original board game version of The Horus Heresy: Betrayal At Calth, although judging by his enthusiastic after-action report it can be a quite thrilling experience. As Games Workshop is wont to do these days, they've licensed out the rights to the PC adaptation to a lesser-known studio. Enter small VR outfit Steel Wool Studios.

Suddenly the Primarch’s attention was diverted when he looked below their position and saw half a dozen surviving Word Bearers carrying the bloody carcass of Kor Phaeron. Somehow, the wretched First Captain of the XVII th Legion remained alive despite the fact that Guilliman had torn out his primary heart. Drawing their Bolters, the Ultramarines fired upon the retreating Word Bearers, just as their forms shimmered and vanished in a cascade of teleporter energy. Five Cataphractii Terminators, with weapon options including combi bolters, power fists, lightning claws, chain fists, power swords, heavy flamers, and grenade harnesses Leave no stone upon stone, salt the earth with the blood of the fallen and leave only ashes to mark their passing. Let Calth be the grave marker of the Ultramarines." It's still a turn-based board game, driven by dice, but the radical shift in perspective does give the game a distinct look. The current early access build includes multiplayer and the first of five story-mode acts, with the rest of the story content and a full skirmish vs AI mode planned to roll out in later updates. The developers estimate that they'll need about six months in early access to get everything in line for the v1.0 launch. The fleet's only saving grace was that the Word Bearers were refraining from destroying the largest capital ships, instead using boarding parties to capture them intact. Gage mobilised void-parties to repel these boarders, led by Thiel. It was during this desperate fight, when the Ultramarines were outnumbered eight to one, that Guilliman reappeared. He had been missing for hours after the destruction of the Honour's bridge, but his enhanced physiology allowed him to survive the near-vacuum outside the ship. Guilliman slew several Word Bearers with his bare hands before Thiel persuaded him to re-board the ship. [2t] More than one-half of the Ultramarines' muster (at least one hundred thousand Ultramarines, and thousands more soldiers) died during the Battle of Calth, and many more likely perished during the years of fighting in the Underground War that saw the scattered remains of the Word Bearers flee beneath the catacombs of Calth. However, the Word Bearers ultimately failed to eradicate the XIII Legion, and Guilliman lost little time in embarking his remaining forces to Terra, to intervene in Horus's planned overthrow of the Emperor. This was to prove decisive to the outcome of the Horus Heresy; although the Ultramarines were unable to reach Terra in time to take part in the battle, word of their approach reached Horus, forcing him to gamble by allowing the Emperor to teleport aboard Horus's ship. [Needs Citation] Low Ammo: Whenever a unit makes a Shoot action, halve the Firepower of each model’s Ranged Weapon (rounding up). Note that this does not affect Critical Effects – for example, a Plasma Gun’s critical effect still adds 4 dice to the roll. Roughly 500,000 Cultists from the Recursive Kin and the Ring, Brotherhood of the Knife, and Mandari [9a] For some of you, that's maybe already a dealbreaker. But listen – don't dismiss the process of assembling your miniatures until you've given it a try. I find it a really calming experience, a bit of a chill-out, as I play some music and carefully assemble each little guy. And the game comes with a lot of options in the building process too – you can choose, to an extent, which weapons to glue onto your miniatures. Assembling on your own means you can pose the miniatures how you wish too. A raised arm here, a lean there, a head turned this way or that. It's an enjoyable process, I think, and never really feels like work.

Single-Player Campaign: 24 combat scenarios exploring the conflict between two factions of Space Marines, divided into 5 Acts. The story progresses linearly and each level presents unique challenges intertwined with the drama of the narrative. The Traitors also possessed multiple battle groups of massive Traitor Titan war engines within their ranks. Magos Tawren suggested seeking refuge at Leptius Numinus, the old Imperial gubernatorial palace on the plains of Calth. Leptius Numinus possessed a non-active but functional data-engine as well as a high-cast Vox transceiver array. The first shots have been fired in the conflict that will change the future of mankind. Brother Legions of Space Marines taking arms against one another. The noble Ultramarines are betrayed on Calth by the zealous Word Bearers bent on tearing down the Imperium. A dark ritual ignites the system’s star, sending both Legions underground to battle for their honor, their belief, the fate of the Imperium, or just to survive.
