All-purpose polyester or cotton thread – I’d recommend you match the color either to your fabric or the buttonhole thread you’ll be using, so that the overcasting stitches blend in seamlessly.
Prepare the area by marking, cutting, and overcasting the raw edges as outlined in the section on preparation. Make sure you punch a small hole at one end using a leather hole punch. If your button is loose but still hanging on, you should use your cutting tool to take away the thread that’s still keeping the button on the shirt. A seam ripper will work best for this but you can also use a different type of cutting tool, just make sure that you’re not damaging the fabric of the shirt itself. Next, just use your cutting tool or your fingers to remove any excess old thread that still happens to be hanging on to either the button or the garment. Extra-strong thread is essentially a heavier-weight, heavier-duty version of general purpose sewing thread. It’s perfect for seams that will be subject to heavy stress or undergo a lot of abrasion. Photo credit: Sara Maker Photo credit: Kat Waters When should I use it? button, usually disklike piece of solid material having holes or a shank through which it is sewed to one side of an article of clothing and used to fasten or close the garment by passing through a loop or hole in the other side. Purely decorative, nonutilitarian buttons are also frequently used on clothing. In medieval Europe, garments were laced together or fastened with brooches or clasps and points, until buttonholes were invented in the 13th century. Then buttons became so prominent that in some places sumptuary laws were passed putting limits on their use. Place the button where you would like it to sit on the fabric / on your project. Mark the center of the button by poking a marking tool through the holes of the button. This will be the starting point for your buttonhole. Imagine yourself away for an event and one of the buttons of your coat or dress falls off. What's worse, that button makes a world of difference in how you will look in that outfit. That's where this skill comes in! You'll be a lifesaver if this happens to one of your peers, too.
Needle threader (optional) – if you're struggling threading needles, it won't hurt to have this in your kit. You will likely be working on at least two layers of fabric as you’re sewing the buttonhole. To prevent the layers from shifting, you can also do some basting stitches by hand around the area where the buttonhole will go. I’d recommend doing this before cutting the fabric open, so that the cut goes through the same spot in all the layers involved. Invisible thread has two main types – mono and multifilament. Monofilament is more common and resembles an extremely thin fishing line, while multifilament more closely resembles a traditional sewing thread. Both are made from nylon. Come up through the buttonhole, keeping a tail that’s about 2” (5 cm).
