About this deal

I don’t cross tie for pelvic injuries or broken legs, I have a few boxes designed for this so they are almost like stalls. Horses face the window so they can look out at the world, munch their haylage, and drink, but they can’t turn round or lie down. They heal much faster, and are much less likely to develop stress induced laminitis this way. Taylor, H.P. (August 17, 1993). "The railway sleeper: 50 years of pretensions, prestressed concrete". The Structural Engineer. Institution of Structural Engineers. 71 (16): 281–288. The fractional inch spacing at the fishplate corresponds to the thermal expansion gap allowed between the rail ends. I understand that vets, therapists, and farriers should not be expected to put themselves in jeopardy with a horse that might lash out at them. However, a responsible owner should put in the time and effort to ensure the horse is okay with whatever intervention is bothering it beforehand. I don’t expect my farrier to have to deal with an unruly horse. Nevertheless, in my opinion, it’s not okay to hide the issue with cross-ties. Cook, J. H. G. (1988). Institution of Civil Engineers (ed.). Urban Railways and the Civil Engineer. Thomas Telford. ISBN 0-7277-1337-X. Using cross ties is a great way to tether your horse while working with them. It provides you space and keeps the animal centered, so they don’t get tangled or – hurt you. Cross ties should be at least the height of your horses’ whithers and meet in the middle. The London, Midland and Scottish Railway specified 18 sleepers per 45-foot (13.72m) rail and 24 sleepers per 60-foot (18.29m) rail, [4] both of which correspond to 2,112 sleepers per mile. When my granddaughter and I went to the racehorse barn, she noticed that the trainer secured the horses differently from us at home. We typically use a single lead rope, while he uses cross ties. On our way home, she wanted to know all about cross ties and if we could set some up for her horse. Network Rail to replace wooden sleepers with recycled plastic". The Telegraph. 4 May 2009. I also answer some common questions. If you are considering purchasing cross ties for your horse or are just curious about them, then this guide is for you! What are cross ties, and what do they do? The helical reinforcement is a good choice in terms of uniformly distributing loads when compared to the normal rings (lateral ties).

Historically wooden rail ties were made by hewing with an axe, called axe ties, or sawn to achieve at least two flat sides. Historically, steel ties have suffered from poor design and increased traffic loads over their normally long service life. These aged and often obsolete designs limited load and speed capacity but can still be found in many locations globally and performing adequately despite decades of service. There are great numbers of steel ties with over 50 years of service and in some cases they can and have been rehabilitated and continue to perform well. Steel ties were also used in specialty situations, such as the Hejaz Railway in the Arabian Peninsula where the dry, hot climate made wood ties unsatisfactory. [9] Sleepers are 8ft 6in (2.59m) long, 10 inches (254mm) wide and 5 inches (127mm) deep. The two sleepers adjacent to a joint may be 12 inches (305mm) wide where the formation is soft or the traffic is heavy and fast. Sleepers are mostly spaced 2ft 7in (0.79m) apart (centre-to-centre) but are closer adjacent to fishplated rail joints where the spacing sequences are as follows with the spacing at the fishplate highlighted. Lancaster, Patricia J. (2001). Construction in Cities: Social, Environmental, Political, and Economic Concerns. CRC Press. ISBN 0-8493-7486-3.Most European railways also now use concrete bearers in switches and crossing layouts due to the longer life and lower cost of concrete bearers compared to timber, which is increasingly difficult and expensive to source in sufficient quantities and quality.

On the highest categories of line in the UK (those with the highest speeds and tonnages), pre-stressed concrete ties are the only ones permitted by Network Rail standards. If I have a horse that has difficulty tolerating a procedure I much prefer to hold a horse on a lead rope than to tie it up. Through the feel of the lead rope I can interact with it every second and guide it to change its thought and help it relax and find calmness. Cross-ties hinder my ability to do that.a b "Y-Stahlschwelle". Some information derived from a lecture by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Karl Endmann. oberbauhandbuch.de. February 28, 2006. Various methods exist for fixing the rail to the railroad ties. Historically spikes gave way to cast iron chairs fixed to the tie, more recently springs (such as Pandrol clips) are used to fix the rail to the tie chair. Schut, Jan H. (2004). In the unlikely event of them breaking, provided the end with the moulded impression of a horse’s head picture is on the head collar, they will spring away from the horse. Krylov, Victor V. (2001).
