About this deal

Another difference is that the flapper rig is mostly used by sea anglers in the UK, while other double hook surf fishing setups, such as the high low fishing rig, the pompano fishing rig, and the paternoster rig are more commonly used by US anglers.

Firstly, the sliding sinker allows fish to grab the baited hook and swim away with it without feeling resistance from the weight. This results in more successful hookups compared to a fixed sinker setup.

But you can also use the dropper loop rig with any kind of cut bait or natural bait, such as sand fleas, crabs or squid strips. However, many anglers prefer to use setups with multiple mosquito hooks for this.

Another way to fish a flapper rig is to lower it vertically from a pier, jetty, or boat. As for surf fishing, it’s best to keep your line taut after the weight reaches the bottom, as that will allow you to detect bites with your rod tip. The flapper rig is most often used for surf fishing, though it can also be fished vertically from a boat or a pier. It is baited with cut fish or other natural bait. Flapper rig components In fact, you can combine these two properties ingeniously. If there is a strong current flowing parallel to the beach, cast out your fish finder rig and let the weight settle on the bottom. This saltwater setup is a multi-hook rig with the weight attached to the end of the line, and the hooks attached to dropper loop knots above the sinker. E Trap your snood swivel between a pair of beads, followed by a pair of crimps (or stop knots – these allow you to adjust the distance between snoods). While the overall structure of the flapper rig is similar to that of other multi-hook rigs for bottom fishing, what sets it apart from these is that the snoods of the flapper rig are tied to swivels fixed on the leader with the help of crimps.

Generally speaking, the rig body should measure around 1-1.5 meters (3-5 ft). That’s what I’m using and what I see others using. A flapper rig is a popular surf fishing rig that consists of a weight attached to the end of the leader, as well as two to three hooks rigged on snoods above the weight. Beads and / or sequins can be added to the snoods as attractors before adding the hooks; buoyant beads can be effective on the upper snoods. Secondly, the shape of the pyramid sinker allows it to burrow into the bottom of sandy areas in the surf, which is very effective for anchoring the rig in strong tides. You can choose any of the sinkers that are used for surf fishing, including a pyramid sinker, bank sinker, or breakaway sinker (also called spider weight). How to make a flapper rigThere can be no doubt that the fish finder rig is one of the best surf fishing rigs ever, and its ease of use also makes it a great beach fishing rig for beginners. For my flapper rigs, I use 60-80 lb monofilament rig bodies because mono is stretchy and helps to absorb stress. Also, monofilament is less visible in the water. This gives a great advantage when using the flapper rig as it’s made up of many items and can spook fish when thrown in the water. Using an invisible line will help to improve your presentation and thus make fish more willing to bite. As I have already alluded to, the use of a non-balanced, spherical, heavy hookbait potentially creates issues in terms of maintaining the consistency I always strive for—it is enough to make me go all giddy (and reach for a paper bag to breath into to stop me from hyperventilating!). But I also recognise that this specific combination works amazingly well. In fact, the most capable anglers I know who use, and love this presentation, don’t seem to share my concerns about round baits, specifically the fact that they never seem to settle uniformly. This helps you to cover more ground in search of feeding fish, which is how this surf rig originally got its name. Since dropper loops are also used for many other saltwater bottom rigs, it’s well worth learning to tie this knot. For more information, read our detailed guide to the dropper loop rig. Double drop bottom rig

Then open your bail and slowly release line, which allows the current to carry your baited circle hook parallel to the beach. Below the sinker, the main line (usually braid) is tied to a barrel swivel, which in turn connects to a 1 to 3 foot long mono leader ending in a snelled hook. Two hooks are a popular compromise and very often the choice of the freelance angler for runof- the-mill venues and also mixed species fishing.

You can also add a buffer bead between the sinker and the swivel, which protects the knot on the swivel from being damaged. The best readymade sea fishing rigs for Dover sole feature a means to keep the bait hard on the bottom and also include things that will pique their interest, such as fluttering blades and beads or bright sleeves. Think about durability… Anything that is in sea water for a long period of time is going to be damaged, that’s a simple fact. The best readymade sea fishing rigs should have technology to negate this. It’s no secret that knots are a common failure point, so look for rigs that have beads above the knots to cushion the constant wearing of the sea. Fluorocarbon has anti abrasive properties too, so if your rig uses this in its construction, all the better. Consensus amongst many Flipper aficionados is that the rig works best, relatively short—certainly no more than 8-inches long (that’s 20cm to the kids). As such, it is at its most effective, the hooklink tightening for the ‘flip’ to flop over. I’m sure by now you all have a firm handle on skinned hooklinks, i.e. where to strip them and by how much, to allow the hook to move unimpeded. A nice heavy hooklink like TA’s original Tungskin is ideal, but do not be afraid to experiment, as the world really is your oyster when it comes to rig construction. Position the swivel and the crimps at the correct distance above the weight, and then use pliers to tighten the crimps and secure the swivel in place.
