About this deal

These plants usually remain in the same spot two years in a row. Then we recommend creating a new bed in a different place with young plants. Strawberries also grow well in pots and planters, but you need to store them in a cool frost-free area for the winter. Perpetual strawberries – sometimes called everbearers, they produce small flushes of fruit over a long period, from early summer until the first autumn frosts. The crops are not as large as summer-fruiting varieties, the fruits are smaller and plants are less likely to produce runners.

If growing strawberries in pots or hanging baskets, feed them every two weeks during the growing season with a balanced fertiliser. When flowering begins, switch to a high-potash liquid fertiliser to encourage good fruiting. After cropping, remove any straw and netting to allow better air flow around the crown of the plant. As soon as you notice small berries beginning to form, apply a tomato fertiliser weekly or fortnightly to give fruiting a boost. Remove any extra runners that develop and keep on top of your watering. You should be ready to begin harvesting from June through September depending on the varieties you choose. In the autumn, cut away any diseased or damaged foliage. In colder areas we recommend some protection over winter such as straw or a fleece. This will help the strawberries to fruit earlier next year. Plant strawberries in mid-spring or in late summer/early autumn – no later than the first week of September innorthern Britain and the second week of September in southern regions. Planting in August or early September gives them longer to get established before fruiting, so they should produce a better crop.Remove ALL the flowers that grow off your runners that first year to let the plant put its energy into the roots. When you want to have new plants for putting in the ground, always take rooted runners off your youngest mother plants. Feed your strawberries in the spring with our special strawberry fertiliser. Do not use one with too much nitrogen because that makes them watery. Keep the bed free of weed and water extra in dry periods. A nice mulch is recommended because it helps keep the soil moist as well as protecting the fruit from rot. Alpine strawberries like 'Mignonette' produce lots of very small and sweet berries from July through to September. Just snip the runner close to where the NEW growth is. Plant that baby in a separate bed or area. This is how you get new daughter plants.

If you're planting into a basket, it's best to limit yourself to three or four strawberry plants in a 30cm (12in) basket. Add water-retaining granules and slow-release fertiliser into the compost before planting.

Give your strawberries plenty of space. Dig a hole with a trowel big enough to take the roots of the plant. Plant them 45cm (18in) apart, leaving 75cm (30in) between rows - the crown should be level with the soil surface. The massive berriesthat arise from this stunning new variety could be the largest strawberries ever and unlike some other 'king-sized' fruits they are simply bursting with flavour too. The cold weather conditions described by Dr. Nir Dai led to a bumper crop of strawberries for Ariel’s fruit farm, producing not just one, but four sizable strawbs.
