The House by the Lake' captures the story of how the writer and narrator, Thomas Harding, seeks to preserve the house that was built by his family near Berlin in the 20s. He sets out to gain evidence that it is of historical significance, unravelling its complex past through the ages of the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich, the DDR and the subsequent unification of Germany. The result is an intimate and thoughtful story within a story. For the most part non-fiction, with what I am assuming are some embellishments in the form of dialogues and day to day interactions between the characters. Staff are positive role models at all times and demonstrate their respect for others through their behaviour. The house is situated by a small lake on the outskirts of Berlin. From the pictures in the book the landscape still has a very picturesque feel to it – making it very attractive to Berliners who wanted, and could afford, a home away from home. The lake’s surroundings were bought by a developer in the early 1900’s. Concept

As the story of the house began to take shape, Thomas realized that there was a chance to save it - but in doing so, he would have to resolve his own family's feelings towards their former homeland, and a hatred handed down through the generations.
