MORE INFO: Of course I was in my garden on a beautiful sunny day with no rain and wind. How would it go pitching in wind and rain? Price – as you’d expect the price of a product can be an instantly recognisable factor on what sort of quality you can expect. Whoever came up with the phrase “you get what you pay for” pretty much hit the nail on the head. Whilst it’s not always the case and there are many bargains to be had, you can as a general rule, expect the higher priced products to offer better quality than a the cheapest option. We’ll dive into the price of Terra Nova Laser Compact 2 Tent in more detail in a moment. We couldn’t be happier that U.S. based brand Big Agnes have started to bring their well thought-out and fully featured tents to our side of the pond. This, the Copper Spur HV UL2 is very similar to that of the MSR Hubba Hubba NX in that it’s inner pitched first yet can be used freestanding and without the fly when conditions are more favourable. Included are Dyneema reflective guylines that are three times stronger than standard guyropes, adding extra support.

If conditions are poor and you need to double-pole the tent, there are extra eyelets in the pull-out tapes for the pole feet Roomy, cheap and able to handle heavy rain, the Grampian 2 is perfect if you don’t mind the extra kilos. To be honest, your route to finding the best fit tent for your needs is a series of personal questions you need to ask yourself. We all have different needs.

A simple, effective design with single entrance help keep weight down. The low profile of the tent, guy lines and low-cut fly make it an excellent tent for battling the wind and rain. Don’t be scared to ask landowners for permission to camp: pub gardens, people’s gardens, churchyards, farmers’ fields… wherever it is and whoever you ask will almost always let you stay.

Using our most durable flysheet fabrics and made in the UK, this series gives peace of mind to those who may experience severe weather when travelling to the most remote parts of the world. As you can see in the picture, this doesn’t feature the internal or external pole sleeves you normally see on tents, but instead has a system that involves a bungee cord and little hooks. It’s actually very, very simple to master and makes for some very speedy pitching and an overall very stable structure. Target User: Those looking for a good all-around lightweight tent, that can be used across a whole range of activities throughout the year. Be prepared to accept a slightly heavier weight (than tents in the Lightweight Series) for more space and strength. The Southern Cross tents have taken inspiration from the award-winning Laser range with added features to turn it into a fan-favourite 4-season tent. The added external cross pole provides excellent stability and allows for rapid pitching in any condition, not to mention, it looks great too.Three-season / two-person / inner pitched first / height: 104cm, length 213cm / two porches / 10 pegs provided / two DAC Pressfit Aluminium Poles / fly: 68D 190T Poly Taffeta 3000mm PU / floor: 68D 190T Poly Taffeta 3000MM PU / 70% 15D Taffeta: 30% 15D No-See-Um mesh. It’s three-season rated and is completely free from any eco hazardous PFCs. Instead, there’s specifically developed DWRs that are kinder to the earth, and recycled fabrics used all throughout. I'm feeling enthused by the idea of some more camping. Possibly a mix of short bike trips and overnight hikes, nothing really extreme. Now we're in September I suspect prices are lower than in April. Kudos to Sierra Designs for their eco efforts here as well. Out of all the tents in this best two-person tents round-up, this one is arugably the most eco-friendly. The materials, for instance, come from recycled sources and no eco-hazardous chemicals are present. Good, reliable tents will be made from lightweight but strong and weatherproof materials. Look for something that has a strong waterproof rating, shown by hydrostatic head. Anything with a flysheet over 4,000mm will be reliable and the higher the number is the better. For the groundsheet, look for something rated at 5,000mm or more. Then there’s the fabric durability: you should look for a high denier strength – ideally 20D and over for the flysheet – and a ripstop weave. For More Like This

The flysheet is made from a 5000mm silicone-coated ripstop nylon while inside there’s a half mesh inner with an impressive 6000mm waterproof rating on the base. It’s pitched flysheet first, or you can pitch the whole thing as one. It’s all simply done, you just slide the main hooped pole through an external sleeve and then the ends are propped up by short poles. The Terra Nova tent range is divided into 5 series to help you to find your ideal tent by listing the ideal use and target user. See all of the Terra Nova tents below: ULTRA Series

There’s a webbing loop at the bottom of the flysheet door to accommodate a trekking pole, enabling you to create a useful canopy Although it is a 1-person tent for overnight stays it could also be used as snug accommodation for 2. It is a more compact version of the Laser Competition and from the moment it was released it started to impress, winning the UK Outdoor Industry Awards 2019 for Tents and Awnings. That got us thinking though, that we’re looking at every possible item from Terra Nova so it would be good to narrow our search down even further and only look at Terra Nova branded products within the 2 man tents category. The flysheet is 15D ripstop nylon, coated on both sides with MSR’s proprietary Durashield PU, and finished with taped seams. The inner is almost entirely made from 10D polyester micro mesh, with a bathtub groundsheet made of the same material as the rainfly (again 1,200mm HH). The mesh inner keeps the tent weight down while ensuring excellent condensation control. In terms of waterproofing, the Hydrostatic Head rating is 1,200mm. The most notable feature of the bivvy, however, is that you can wear it. Yes, you heard right… you can have the bug net closed around you (or left open), but sit up and perform camp chores with just your hands on the outside. Cooking, reading and organising your gear are all easily performed, whilst your head and body are protected from bugs and inclement weather. It sounds a little bizarre, but in practice, it’s actually very, very useful. Target User: An outdoor athlete who is wanting the latest technology and lightest kit to achieve their best performance. Carbon fibre poles help keep the weight down. Despite the compact size and featherweight design, the tent is fully waterproof and rated for three-season use. A small porch offers storage space for kit but, as ever with a tent like this, the Vaude Lizard GUL 1P is not particularly spacious. Target User: The outdoor enthusiast who is looking for a good balance of weight, durability and space. To help to increase space inside the tent and to keep your feet away from any potential condensation, two carbon fibre struts are added into the corners of the inner at the bottom end. When pegged down these make a big difference. Further space inside the inner can be achieved by using two ‘volumising guyouts’ that sit on either side of the tent. These thin cords attach the inner to the fly, pulling the inner out, creating a little more width. Full Specifications
