According to Tanew et al. [ 15], the bioavailability of BP is lower than that of its 8-methoxypsoralen (8-MOP) isomer. However, the side effects of BP are much less compared to 8-MOP, allowing the administration of higher concentrations. The authors reported that doubling the administration dose from 0.6 to 1.2 mg/kg of BP resulted in an increase of its concentrations in the serum of the volunteers from 81 to 164 ng/mL, suggesting that its bioavailability follows a linear behavior. Although the bioavailability of BP is less than that of its isomer, a study in Sprague-Dawley rats in a 12-hour fasting state revealed that the absolute oral bioavailability of BP for low, medium, and high concentrations (5, 10, and 15 mg/kg, respectively) ranged from 70 to 94%, indicating that it has good absorption. Caviar Bergamot, which I would have called Caviar Lemon for the strong dominance of this citrus, reveals itself with a boost of citrus. A clean and citric quality that it’s like drinking freshly squeezed lemon, grapefruit, and bergamot juice. To my nose, the three citrus fruits are slightly unbalanced, and the fragrant lemon prevails over the others, followed by the sweet and sour tones of grapefruit and just a touch of bergamot. The combined anti-inflammatory and proresolution activities suggest that BP may be particularly valuable for the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases [ 7]. In addition, it has also been evidenced to act as an analgesic (Teye [ 8]) (Teye Azietaku, 2016 #50) and anticoagulant [ 9] and has hepatoprotective properties [ 10] and anticonvulsant effects [ 11]. Moreover, various studies revealed that BP has inhibitory effects on 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX), cyclooxygenase (COX), and topoisomerase 1 (Teye [ 8, 12]). So it’s not surprising that Aldi perfume dupes have become some of the most popular products in the supermarket’s surprisingly vast In this comprehensive review, the literature on the biological properties of bergapten was collected, analyzed, and summarized. Scientific search engines such as PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar have been used to collect all published articles on this bioactive compound. Several MESH terms have been used as keywords such as “5-Methoxypsoralen”, “Anti-Inflammatory Agents”, “Humans”, “Methoxsalen”, “Osteoporosis”, “Animals”, “Bone Resorption / prevention & control”, “Diabetes Complications”, “Disease Models”, “Animal”, “Methoxsalen /adverse effects”, “Methoxsalen/pharmacokinetics”, “Biological Availability”, and “Clinical Trials as Topic”. All significant papers published on bergapten in English have been cited in this study. The identification and examination of the collected manuscripts were based on their titles and abstracts. The reference lists of the works taken over were also examined to identify other relevant works. The scientific names of the plants have been validated according to Plant List [ 13, 14]. 3. Bioavailability of Bergapten Bergamot oil is one of the most commonly used ingredients in perfumery. [17] It is prized for its ability to combine with an array of scents to form a bouquet of aromas that complement each other. [18] Bergamot is a major component of the original Eau de Cologne composed by Jean-Marie Farina at the beginning of the 18th century in Germany. The first use of bergamot oil as a fragrance ingredient was recorded in 1714, and can be found in the Farina Archive in Cologne. The open-field test is considered as an indicator of the emotional state of the animal, which allows an easy and fairly rapid assessment of well-defined behaviours, such as crossing, wall rearing, grooming, center, and immobility, and it is widely used in the screening of drugs that act on the central nervous system (CNS) [ 27]. Particularly, crossing and wall rearing can be, respectively, regarded as indicators of locomotor activity and exploratory behaviour, whereas grooming, center, and immobility are behaviours positively correlated with fear or emotionality [ 27– 29]. The rat was placed in the center of a dark plastic circular arena (75 cm diameter) in a sound proof room with 20 lux light [ 27]. The duration of each behavioural session was 20 min. The assessed parameters (general locomotor activity in an interval of 5 min (square limit crossings with both forepaws and wall rearing), anxiety-related behaviour (face and body grooming, head washing, and time spent in the center of arena), and immobility) were videotaped and analyzed to be scored (Labehaviour). 2.5.
