About this deal

Oats are sown in the spring or early summer in colder areas, as soon as the soil can be worked. An early start is crucial to good fields, as oats go dormant in summer heat. In warmer areas, oats are sown in late summer or early fall. Oats are cold-tolerant and are unaffected by late frosts or snow. Oats can also be left standing until completely ripe and then combined with a grain head. This causes greater field losses as the grain falls from the heads, and to harvesting losses, as the grain is threshed out by the reel. Without a draper head, there is also more damage to the straw, since it is not properly oriented as it enters the combine's throat. Overall yield loss is 10–15% compared to proper swathing. Additionally, oatstraw is a good source of calcium and magnesium, two nutrients critical for a restful night’s sleep.

Calcium is required for the brain to synthesize melatonin from tryptophan. Magnesium is also necessary for melatonin production, and magnesium deficiency frequently manifests as insomnia. Areas relate to field areas multiplied by the number of crops in the year and hence differ from those shown in table 2.2.

These coproducts are always rich in fibre, but the protein content may be as low as incereal straws or similar to a good hay for example in peastraw. Positive experiments were done for inclusion of such straws in rabbit feeding, e.g. with ryegrass straw ( Aderibigbe et al., 1992), Phaseaolus vulgaris straw ( Elgohary et al., 2014),cucumber wine straw ( El-Maaty et al., 2014; Egla et al., 2013), fenugreek straw (Amer et al.,2013), flax straw ( Colin et al., 2005), faba bean straw ( Asar et al., 2010), or for garlic straw ( Liu et al., 2019).

Straw is often a synonym for the haulms and vines of legume crops ( pea, common bean, lentil, cowpea...), oil crops (rape, groundnut, soybean...), root crops (potatoes) or textile crops ( flax). Legume straws are much more difficult to recover: in humid climates the leaves tend to discolour or drop at, or before, harvest, and in dry conditions they shatter. Where the final drying of the crop takes place at the homestead, it is easier to recover the leaves and stems. Numerous benefits of oatstraw are derived from the nutrients and minerals found in green oat stalks.

The established property of their cholesterol-lowering effects [1] has led to acceptance of oats as a health food. Oat straw does not contain gluten like other grains such as wheat, barley, and rye. It does contain a protein known as avenin that is well tolerated by most people with Celiac disease and those with gluten intolerance or sensitivity. Dosage and Administration In some countries, cereals are treated on the field with weedkillers such as glyphosate. Fortunately, the usein rabbit feeding (growth and reproduction) of grain + straw produced in these conditions did not impair the performance of rabbits( Fris Jensen, 1988). Other straws We strongly advise that a good layer of bedding material is added on top of the mats, as this will help soak up urine and contain droppings. Some people choose to use rubber matting without any bedding, although we at the BHS do not endorse this practice. This management option can lead to wet floors, dirty rugs and horses. Many horses do not like to urinate on hard surfaces, so adding bedding will help prevent this problem.

All cereal production estimates have been standardised to 14.5% moisture content with the exception of 2022 when the hot dry conditions led to lower average moisture contents in the harvested crops. 2022 production data will only be adjusted for farms which have reported moisture content above 14.5% for cereals and 9.0% for oilseed rape. Any production data which has been reported with lower moisture contents has not been adjusted Hitchens, A (6 August 2018). "Hey, Where's my oat milk?". The New Yorker . Harvest 2022 progressed well and finished earlier than the previous 5 years. For most of England and Wales harvest was completed by the end of August and for Scotland and areas of North-East England by mid- September. Harvest was completed before heavy rains arrived later on in September. With the exceptionally hot weather grain required little additional drying this year. Oat straw is prized by cattle and horse producers as bedding, due to its soft, relatively dust-free, and absorbent nature. The straw can also be used for making corn dollies. Tied in a muslin bag, oat straw was used to soften bath water.
