Ethics Statement In contrast Milam, (2006) examined optimism and pessimism in relation to PTG and found that both mediated the relationship between PTG and positive outcomes. Indeed they found that those low in either construct were the ones most likely to derive benefits, leading the author to hypothesise that those who have no strong expectations about the future (e.g. those not overly optimistic or pessimistic) were the ones most likely to experience positive outcomes following a traumatic event. I have learned so much. I feel so empowered. I’m in control of my life... that is the things that are controllable. I know I will get through everything. I will never give up” (Ingrid).

PTG is a relatively new area to attract research interest. Although the adversity hypothesis is well established, researchers have focused on the negative consequences of traumatic or stressful events. A number of issues have arisen from the PTG literature. Namely, what does PTG refer to, is it related to wellbeing, do any factors facilitate its development and what do we mean by growth? The initial version of the scale had a total of 20 items but was subsequently revised to 10 items in 1997. After discussion, we deleted three of these, leaving seven items. All items were scored on a four-point Likert scale, ranging from 1 (completely incorrect) to 4 (completely correct). The theoretical score ranges from 7 to 28. The higher the score, the higher the participant's level of GSE. In this study, the Cronbach's alpha for this scale was 0.875. When interviewing became possible again, 22 women still wanted to participate and were interviewed. Many participants were very emotional during the interview. Because of the delicacy of the subject participants were not asked to confirm the final analytic framework or the main theme. The 12 basic research steps of the Vancouver School process and how they were followed in the present study. Steps in the Research Process The researchers reflected upon their preconceived ideas and consciously put them aside as much as possible. This study uses the Chinese version of the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory originally proposed by Tedeschi and Calhoun (1996) and translated and adapted by Geng et al. (2011) to suit the Chinese context ( Geng et al., 2011). The 21-item scale is divided into five dimensions, namely, interpersonal relationships, new possibilities, personal strength, spiritual changes, and appreciation of life. The scale uses the six-point Likert scale scoring method, and the scoring ranges from 1 (feeling no change) to 6 (feeling a lot of change). The theoretical score ranges from 21 to 126. The higher the score, the higher the level of PTG. In this study, Cronbach's alpha was 0.958. Event-Related Rumination Inventory
