About this deal

A bold (both graphically and narratively) reimagining of the classic fairy tale, Little Red is truly subversive in that it subverts the concept of victimhood with a deliciously dark twist. Huffington Post A witty twist on a favourite fairy tale, Little Red was a New York Times Best Illustrated Children's Book . The perfect gift for fairy tale fans of all ages , complete with tree-shaped cover flaps, and bright, bold colours that make this a sumptuous sight to behold. Final verdict: LITTLE RED is a simple recounting of the fairytale with a touch of horror/scary that is great for less sensitive readers before Halloween. Little Red is a children’s picture book, adapted from the classic Little Red Riding Hood tale with my own text and illustrations.

This simple book will appeal to the squirmiest young children, but it might be a bit too gruesome for the more sensitive child. The action takes place off-screen, but you see Red holding an axe, and then you see Red wearing the wolf's skin, and granny waving good-bye from her front door, so it's pretty clear that Red killed the wolf with an axe and released her grandmother from the wolf's stomach. Some kids will LOVE that twist. Growing up, we all loved fairy tales. Often the story was scary, or the woman needed some help to make things work for her. Betha Woollvin wrote these two books with a twist and there was no scary part or the characters can save themselves. A perfectly charming retelling of the classic tale, with plenty of side-eye. This version dispenses with all the details, none of that nonsense about not being able to leave the path, and there's no suspense when she meets the wolf in granny's clothing. Red cuts straight to the chase. She's got a plan. Advice I would give to an aspiring illustrator would be to not judge your own work too early, it could be something beautiful! I try to nurture an idea as much as I can before I show others. Receiving critiques from your peers is vital in the creative process, but if you or others judge an idea before it has bloomed you might start to doubt something that could have been amazing. If you persevere, it might pay off! What left me wanting more: This book is a bit scary and should not be read to sensitive children. The wolf is shown eating the grandmother, and he is definitely a scary presence throughout. Little Red is also shown wearing the wolf's pelt at the end, which may also be challenging for sensitive animal lovers. This is definitely a dark story, and it would be better for children who enjoy a touch of the dark in their fairytales. On the way to visit her grandmother, Little Red Riding Hood meets a big bad wolf in the forest. Although some children may find this encounter frightening, Little Red is a feisty young girl and is not at all intimidated, so continues on her way. Little Red by Bethan Woollvin - Pan Macmillan

How long did it take from creating the dummy for the prize to receiving the finished book? What was the highlight of the process? Bethan Woollvin graduated from the Cambridge School of Art with a First Class Degree in Illustration in 2015, and currently lives and works in Brighton as a freelance illustrator. Inspired by vintage illustration and printmaking, Bethan uses bold colours and quirky characters to tell stories with her illustrations. I was at university whilst I was working on Little Red, so I guess going to lectures and seminars were a bit of a distraction – but in a good way!
Also group critiques were a large part of my studio time at university but they were also helpful in refining my story. I started Little Red whilst I was at university in my second year of my BA in illustration. The class were given a project to create a book in six weeks – that was it, a very open brief. Quite a few people in our class decided to give our brief a bit more structure by taking the opportunity to base it around a live brief or a competition. This is when I heard about the Macmillan prize for illustration. As for what I’d do differently, that is a tough question. I think artists in general are always looking for ways to improve and refine their artwork, but since Little Red has received such a warm reception, it reassures me that I wouldn’t change a thing! The wolf takes a sneaky shortcut to Grandma's house, where he gobbles her up, dresses in her clothes and lies in wait for Little Red. However, this wolf has met his match: when Little Red arrives, she is not fooled by his ridiculous disguise and fearlessly formulates a plan of her own.
