Stohs SJ, Preuss HG, Shara M (August 2012). "A review of the human clinical studies involving Citrus aurantium (bitter orange) extract and its primary protoalkaloid p-synephrine". Int J Med Sci. 9 (7): 527–538. doi: 10.7150/ijms.4446. PMC 3444973. PMID 22991491. From Fran’s ‘confession’ to the vicar and her recollections of the conversations she had with Cara from twenty years ago, one learns regrettably the secrets that shape the trio’s destiny. Bitter orange is an artificial hybrid - it was produced by breeding two different plants together. So it does not have a native range but it is widely cultivated throughout the world. Bitter Orange reminded me most of the lowering Gothic feel of books by Daphne du Maurier and Iris Murdoch (especially The Italian Girl, but there’s also a mention of a fish’s severed head, and a couple of times Frances says she feels as if she’s in a play), but I’d also recommend it to readers who’ve enjoyed recent work by Emma Donoghue, Tessa Hadley, Sarah Perry and Sarah Waters. I didn’t enjoy it quite as much as Fuller’s two previous books: it feels a bit less original, and the symbolism of the orange tree and the various animal appearances is rather heavy-handed. But the characters and atmosphere are top-notch. It’s an absorbing, satisfying novel to swallow down in big gulps on a few of these hot summer days.

Indeed, amid the surge of international attention generated by the U.K. award, Alharthi noted, “People were surprised by the book, and some even said they had no idea a country named Oman existed.” There are so many angles to discuss in this novel. Gender, memory, guilt, relationships, social change, Fuller’s use of clothing in relation to character development, etc. The changes that Frances undergoes are exciting to watch. Early on in the novel, she says:

The lead character is Frances Jellico, who at 39 finds herself at a crossroads. Her ailing, belligerent, and complaining mother, for whom Frances singlehandedly nursed for a decade, has died, leaving her basically nothing. Frances has never had friends or a boyfriend. Her social anxiety pegs very high. Coupled with that, she is overweight and doesn't know the first thing about clothes. But she does know a lot about garden architecture and so has been hired to survey the grounds, including an ornate bridge and various ornamental buildings, to determine their architectural origin. Also invited to the house for the summer is Peter Robertson, an antiques specialist whose job it is to survey the grand house's interior and its contents. Peter brings along with him his girlfriend, Cara Calace, who poses as his wife. They are dazzling, glamorous people, who seemingly have it all—at least in Frances's eyes. Add to all this, the possibility that Lyntons is haunted. Both Frances and Cara see, hear, and experience unusual and unexplainable things, much to Peter's incredulity, doubt, and disgust. the connection between the past family story and present-day story was unclear to me, and indeed the relevance at all of the latter, other than a loose theme in the novel of people trying to control their lives like kites in the wind; Claire Fuller wins debut-novel Desmond Elliott Prize". BBC News. 1 July 2015 . Retrieved 2 July 2015.

There are four characters in this novel, Frances, the narrator, a couple Cara and Peter, and a vicar, Victor.
