The bulk of this issue appears to have stemmed from disagreements between Lane-Poole, and the First Naval Member, Admiral Sir Francis Hyde, who in his final years in command of the RAN could display a disagreeable personality. In 1936 Lane-Poole sent a signal to the Naval Board which was considered highly improper and he subsequently received the "severe displeasure" of the Naval Board. Of note is that the Australian Prime Minister, Joseph Lyons, was required in January 1937 to formally advise the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs that Lane-Poole had been punished! Lane-Poole was appointed to HMS Vernon in November 1915 for more specialist training in torpedos and mines and was promoted to Commander on 30 June 1916. In September of that year he joined the battleship HMS Commonwealth as her Commander (second in command). He served in Commonwealth until July 1917 during which time the ship was part of the Nore Command based in the Thames Estuary. In memory of the Officers and Men of the 45thField Regiment and the 170thMortar Battery, Royal Field Artillery, who lost their lives in Korea and especially those who were killed near this place on 3rd 4thJanuary 1951. On 17th December 1973, a theatre show, Captain Pugwash, written by Ryan and John Kennett, opened at the King's Road Theatre in Chelsea, London. Directed by John Ingram and designed by John Marsh, the entertainment for children played twelve performances a week (twice daily, Monday to Saturday) until 12 January 1974. Edward Philips as Pugwash headed a cast of live actors playing characters including Tom and Cut-Throat Jake. [21] The following year a second play was performed, entitled Captain Pugwash and the Inca Treasure, from 19 December 1974 to 18 January 1975. [22] In 2008 a new show was performed with Richard Alan in the title role. [23] In popular culture Pitt-Rivers spent much of his wealth on a lifetime of travel, financed by selling the most productive land from the Rushmore estate he inherited in Dorset. In 1991, he began to restore the Larmer Tree Gardens in Wiltshire, which had been neglected since his grandfather died in 1900. The gardens reopened to the public in 1995. [7] [8] He and Gronow-Davis collected many works of art, including sculptures by their friend Elisabeth Frink. [9] Cut-Throat Jake has occasionally been known to utter the similar exclamation, "Scupper me skull-and-crossbones!"

For the colour Captain Pugwash episodes, a new recording of the "Trumpet Hornpipe" was commissioned from Johnny Pearson in 1973. This version used accordion, bass and acoustic guitar, and the finished piece was retitled "Shipshape". [11] The recording was published by KPM and was later added to the KPM Recorded Music Library which gave Pearson the composer credit. [15] Pearson’s arrangement of the theme is also used as the goal theme for Fleetwood Town FC.

When John returned home, he claimed that Captain Pugwash appeared without explanation. [1] It ran for the first nineteen issues of Eagle, but was dropped due to being considered too childish, and John replaced it with Harris Tweed. [2]

Rear Admiral Lane-Poole has high professional qualities and has in many ways advanced the technical and fighting efficiency of the Australian Squadron considerably. His considered reports are excellent and he looks at all sides of a subject, is very thorough and takes long views. Unfortunately, his good qualities are frequently obscured by a testy and intolerant personality. My own relations with him have been excellent, and he is loyalty itself; but there were unfortunate passages between him and the Naval Board in my predecessors time (Admiral Sir Francis Hyde). He has antagonised the Press and there is, I am sorry to say, little doubt that the Squadron and Sydney in general feel no great sorrow at his leaving.
