About this deal

Nomad Bees are annoying because they’ll take over the hives used by other solitary bee types. Fortunately there is a limit to how many times this can happen per hive, so if you keep capturing the nomad bees when they come out and re-homing them somewhere away from your hives, you’ll eventually deal with the problem. (Keep at least one or two for breeding, though!) Care and feeding Storsandbie Andrena scotica Perkins, 1916". Norwegian Biodiversity Information Centre . Retrieved 9 July 2017. Your records can add to our understanding of bees in the region and inform conservation and monitoring efforts. Be Mine Valentine Cup Cute Coffee Mug Be Mine Valentines Day Love Couple Gift for Girlfriend Engagement Gift Birthday The clue is in the name. Carrion beetles are attracted to those smells - after all they do eat dead, decomposing things - and therefore some flowers have tuned in to receive a pollination service. A rather gruesome sounding and spectacular plant pollinated by carrion beetles is the Sumatran corpse flower.

Unlike honeybees and bumblebees, solitary bees do not live in colonies with ‘worker’ bees. Rather, a single female builds and provisions her own nest. Depending on the species, solitary bees can be ground or aerial nesters, and may use mud, leaves, body secretions or floral oils as their nesting material. Some are furry and larger like their bumblebee cousins while others are virtually hairless and no more than a few mm in length. A solitary bee belongs to one of 24 different groups or ‘genera’. You may have heard of mining bees, leafcutter bees and mason bees – all are solitary bees leading their own fascinating lives. Inside a solitary bee nest White-tailed bumblebees have a bright yellow collar, a yellow abdominal band and a bright white tail. They look very similar to buff-tailed bumblebees (which have a browner collar and an orange-tinted tail), and early bumblebees (much smaller, with a bright orange or yellow-orange tail). When the hind legs are covered in pollen, the Chocolate Mining Bee looks similar to females of the Buffish Mining Bee. Female Buffish Mining Bees have dense ginger hair and a bright orange pollen brush. When taking photographs, it is useful to capture the hind legs to aid identification.

In early Spring, we often receive enquiries about potential sightings of native Scottish honey bees. In most cases, these are in fact chocolate mining bees, Andrena scotica, which are dark, similar in size to honey bees and resemble them closely. Here are some tips for differentiating between the two. (Sadly, gathering chocolate is not one of the distinguishing characteristics!). Also known as the Noolbenger- it’s aboriginal name - the honey possum is the world’s only true nectar-eating marsupial (indeed, one of the only mammals). Considering honey possums don’t eat honey and are only remotely related to possums, Noolbenger seems a far more appropriate name. Just look at them. Definitely Noolbengers.

Urban or rural, beginner or expert, we need your help to record wild bees across the North East this spring and summer. For each of the 900-odd species of fig in the world, there is a unique species of parasitic wasp which pollinates it. This is one of those marvels of co-evolution, by which neither species could live without the other.

It’s also possible to produce bees using genetic engineering, and some bees can only be created this way, but since I haven’t touched the genetic engineering mechanics at all yet, I’m not going to attempt to detail that here. Ivy bees look a little like honey bees, but their thorax is a bright orange colour and the stripes on their abdomen are more clearly defined and a brighter yellow. [ permanent dead link] Andrena scotica is endemic to Europe where it is found in Ireland east to Poland and the Czech Republic, south to Italy and north to southern Scandinavia [6] [7] and Finland.
