This is an oil-based food colouring which is used specifically for chocolate. It is designed to be painted directly onto chocolate and works with all chocolate varieties including white, milk and dark chocolate. It is 100% edible, each pot contains 35g and there are a range of colours to select from. Brilliant for sponge, not so good for buttercream. This colour was superb for colouring sponge cake, the colour was very vibrant and you didn't need a lot, the heat of cooking didn't seem to effect the colour at all either. To use, simply add a small drop at a time to sugarpaste, icing, buttercream, cake mix, modelling paste, royal icing or marzipan and mix until you achieve the desired shade. Just a small amount of these highly concentrated gels produces instant colour, making them a great long-lasting addition to kitchen cupboards! Liquid food colourings are best for beginners who are looking to add some colour to their baking. As they contain the highest water content, the final result is a more pastel shade.

In contrast to gels, pastes and liquids, Food Colouring Dusts are not usually mixed into icing and cake mixes but instead are brushed onto decorations to provide colour. They can also be mixed with a clear edible spirit to create a paint. What are Lustre Dust Colours? Excellent product, great quality I have always used this food gel for my red velvet cake, it works a treat! Simply great results every time. You can rely on Colour Splash professional food colours to deliver bright and vibrant shades, soft pastels or decadent metallics to suit your needs and achieve your vision. This best quality food colouring can be used to colour icing, fondant, cake batter, chocolate, modelling paste, flower paste, decorations and much more.

The most common culprit is an e-number called Carmine. This can be found in some red, pink and purple food colouring. Carmine is made from cochineal insects so it’s not suitable for those on a vegan diet. Other names for this ingredient are E120, Cochineal, Crimson Lake or Natural Red 5. Note that this is not the same as carmoisine, or E122, which is vegan-friendly. As a result of the high fat content in chocolate, oil-based colourings are the best option as unlike water-based colourings, they do not split and also provide a consistent colour throughout the chocolate. We have oil-based colourings which are used specifically for chocolate and also multi-purpose oil-based colourings. Sugarflair Chocolate Paint Since writing my post about vegan sprinkles, it occurred to me that food colouring is another thing that newbie vegans may struggle with. I know that when I first went vegan, I used plenty of non-vegan food colouring in my bakes, simply because I had no idea! You can add a real wow factor to cakes with edible glitter non-aerosol sprays. They can be sprayed over icing and decorations for the desired effect. How do you use Colouring Sprays?
