About this deal

Trident Layers, “Paid in Gum.” Trident marketed itself as a dentist-recommended gum in the 1970s with their slogan, “Four out of five dentists surveyed recommend sugarless gum for their patients who chew gum.” It was one of several chewing gums that touted its health benefits and became recognized by the American Dental Association for its ability to help prevent cavities when chewed for 20 minutes after eating (but only if it’s sugarless). The brand later maintained the focus on chewing gum to prevent cavities. Still, it shifted its messaging to trendier campaigns and shortened taglines like, “Flavor for your taste without sugar for your teeth.” As a play on the word "double" in the name, one of the most notable aspects of this brand is the advertising campaign featuring identical twins wearing matching outfits. Beginning in 1939 with stylized illustrations of twins, advertisements continued with print ads and later television commercials, featuring actual twins as spokespersons. They lost the gig when Joan became pregnant in 1963 as they were no longer identical twins. Not much is known about the two today. They both got married, and Jayne now lives in Beverly Hills, California. According to Wrigley, the grammatical structure of the word DOUBLEMINT is unusual and elliptical and nobody would describe the characteristics of chewing gum by saying that it ‘has a doublemint flavour’. In addition, the word DOUBLEMINT has many possible meanings, which precludes consumers from remembering one of them in particular, and this gives the sign an ambiguous and suggestive meaning.

We all love a good bubble gum once in a while, right? Well, not if that bubble gum is Hubba Bubba Bubble Tape. The Mowry sisters had arguably the most successful post-Doublemint acting careers. There are too many to list here, but there’s a fun connection to Brittany Daniel. Tia Mowry also starred in the TV show, The Game. Tia and Tamara Mowry Modern Doublemint Twins Amazingly, chewing gum has its own health benefits as well. Some of the advantages you can get by chewing gum are reduced bad breath, getting rid of nausea and teeth protection. If you struggle to focus on a particular task, maybe it is time for you to start chewing gum as it improves brain functions and alertness, allowing you to make much more rational decisions. Is It Good To Have Chewing Gum Every Day?Article 7(1)(c) of Regulation No 40/94 provides that trade marks which ‘consist exclusively of signs or indications which may serve, in trade, to designate the kind, quality, quantity, intended purpose, value, geographical origin, time of production of the goods or of rendering of the service, or other characteristics of the goods or service’ are not to be registered. There’s really nothing that can go wrong with something like the Wrigley or Mars brand. It’s literally true that they’ve faced the test of time over decades and decades and decades and people use more and more of their products every day.” Jayne and Joan Knoerzer (Jayne and Joan Boyd professionally after their mother’s maiden name) were the first Doublemint Twins. They were singers who had no real interest in acting who signed a contract with Wrigley in 1959. They were the first twins in history to appear on television!

In the BABY-DRY case of 2001, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) said that for word combinations, the test is whether the combination in question is the normal way of referring to the goods or services or of representing their essential characteristics in "common parlance". Because of the "syntactically unusual juxtaposition" of the words 'baby' and 'dry', BABY-DRY was not a familiar expression in the English language for describing nappies or their essential characteristics. The combination was a "lexical invention bestowing distinctive power on the mark so formed", so BABY-DRY was not registrable. On appeal, the Court of First Instance (CFI) then ruled that it was sufficient that the OHIM Board of Appeal had applied the descriptiveness test in relation to the word mark EUROHYPO, confirming that a mark which was descriptive of the relevant goods and services was devoid of any distinctive character under Article 7 of the Regulation. The ECJ ruled that although there was some overlap between the 'distinctiveness' and 'descriptiveness' grounds for refusal to register a trade mark, each ground was independent and required separate examination. Ten years of playing twins created issues down the road for them. When they no longer worked as the Doublemint Twins, casting directors typecast them as twins. With no work, except together, the twins began to resent each other. We will admit that the texture of this bubble gum is rather pleasant, so we won't write it off completely. But the flavor? Well, if you're past your childhood years, it likely won't be your favorite, with its artificial taste and sugar-y sweetness. One Influenster user summed it up best: "As an adult this gum is awful. Full of sugar, over sweet, and horrible texture. As a child though it was the best! I always loved the [cotton] candy flavor. Definitely a fun part of growing up is getting to have this gum!" The Court therefore found that the relevant public would understand the word sign INSULATE FOR LIFE as "a reference to very long-lasting services related to the use of a particularly durable insulation material, and not as an indication of the commercial origin of those services".
