About this deal

It is oily and sweet on the palate, but immediately shows some wet cardboard and earth. A salty edge, once more. But it is not really fruity. I get some caramel and walnuts. Turns a bit bitter. Hi Victor thank you for your comments. Recently I have been leaving bottles open for at least an hour before tasting, and also pouring a glass and leaving for at least half an hour before sipping.... It's crossed my mind that this would be a strong case for decanting Whisky? Jura 10 Year Old. Crafted in unusually tall stills, matured in the fresh sea air and American white oak ex-bourbon barrels and finished in the finest aged Oloroso Sherry butts – it’s the perfect marriage of Highland and Island styles.” This bottle I have just bought is pretty nice, in an odd sort of way. It has quite a bit of character, although I am still not altogether convinced i like the Jura character. 40% is about right for it for me, as I don't want that Jura weirdness to be much more intense. I feel a bit the same about Bowmores. I don't think that higher alcohol content is always better in weird whiskies.

This is the latest, reconfigured recipe, of the Jura 10 Years. I reviewed the original Jura 10 a few years ago and didn’t much care for it. I found it to be funky and weird but not in the good and interesting way. It carried this strong earthy cumin-like character from nose to finish which I found off-putting and obtrusive. This, on the other hand, is a different story. Finish: dry and tangy, saltier a bit briny, for me it clings to the sides of my tongue which is a strange sensation that tequila thing never really lets go. With water little bit of coco, dry again, maybe malty but it’s very thin. A Whisky Only Jura Could Make, Born Of Our Island And Still Produced Today In A Bottle Originally Shaped To Withstand The Roughest Of Journeys From Our Home. Crafted In Exceptionally Tall Stills, Matured For 10 Years In American White Oak Ex-Bourbon Barrels And The Fresh Sea Air With A Further Enhancement From The Finest Aged Oloroso Sherry Casks.The palate is lively, with sweet honey on the front, some salty and smoky peat and pepper in the middle, and some soft citrus fruit on the end with a hint of bitterness. On the nose, the whisky is light and fragrant, with notes of fresh flowers, gentle cinnamon and nutmeg notes, an undercurrent of fresh grains, and the slightest hint of smoke. Largely standard stuff, aromatically speaking, but it all comes together cleanly and invitingly. Nose: slightly oily, salty little bit of caramel, a very floral honey and I can’t get the thought of smoked fish out of my head. Bread dough and a tiny bit of pretty raw tequila. With water really dominated by bread dough, there is a suggestion of floral and even some sherbert. I chose this scotch for my wife to maintain her mild interest in my hobby. After sampling several different malts, this won because it is complex, non-peated, and well balanced-- slightly sweet rather than too oaky or dry. Overall I would call it a success (for both of us!). Taste: dried oranges, again notes of cereal, orange blossoms, honey, oak wood shavings, ginger and a whiff of iodine.

Nose: Light and surprisingly fresh: oranges, cereals, sunflower oil, a pinch of butter, wood polish, with faint hints of salt, but overall notes of spring blossoms.Palate: Caramel, right off the bat. It suddenly turns into bitter, sweet and sour honey. Toffee. Its all lightly coated with molasses. The Isle of Jura - west of the Highlands and northeast of Islay, is not that easy to reach. It takes several planes, trains and... a ferry (and the best part of the day) to reach it. That may be part of the charm of this magical island. George Orwell resided there while writing his classic 1984 and called it ‘an extremely unget-at-able place’. Nose: Quite fresh and delicate. Very floral and earthly, like smelling the summer hay. Oak is there too. Smoked apricots; toffee, dehydrated apples, dried cherries, nutmeg and a bit of earthy malt and a light floral nature. Really good review @ markjedi1. I love the fact that whisky can polarize opinion like Jura 10 does.

The one I'm drinking now, however, is much more mellow and has a much nicer mouth feel whereas the previous one had a bit too much burn on it. I like the peppery finish but, for some reason, I can barely smell the stuff unless I put my nose a millimetre above it! Is it peated? Unpeated? Sherried? This new 10 year old single malt from Jura (located on the eponymous island next door to Islay) is all three.
