Her father goes on a journey to a desert to get a book all about the secrets in the world. He gets trapped by a snake and Marcy helps to free him. They have lots of adventures. It’s a really good story and I would recommend it. Marcy and the Riddle of the Sphinx by Joe Todd-Stanton is a fabulous fun topic book for your KS2 Ancient Egypt topic. I like the book. It was very adventurous. It tells us what happens after Arthur and the golden rope and what other adventures he has being on. The book also shows the ancient Egyptian gods. Such a fun follow up to Arthur and the Golden Rope! Arthur has grown up, married, and become a father while still managing to be an avid adventurer. He notices that his daughter Marcy is hesitant to explore the world, so he sets off mysteriously to obtain a book in Egypt for her. Let us introduce you to our six-week English scheme or work for Years 3 and 4 (P4 and 5) based on ‘Marcy and the Riddle of the Sphinx’ by Joe Todd Stanton. If you haven’t already seen this brilliant text, it’s a graphic novel based on Ancient Egypt. Disclaimer: Many thanks to NoBrow for the opportunity to read and review. Please be assure that my opinions are honest. This is worthy continuation on Todd-Stanton's basic premise and it enriches the tapestry he has begun to put together. I like the fact that he uses Arthur yet again, albeit as starting point to set Marcy's story into motion, just as very much appreciate Marcy as the book's protagonist. It ensures both continuity of and expansion upon what has already been introduced and established.

Marcy and the Riddle of the Sphinx is very well written and beautifully illustrated. My son and I love the step by step illustrations of Marcy as she takes to reach her destination like the picture below or how she travels through the maze of obstacles to rescue her dad. The illustration of Egypt is an eyeful. There are lots of Egypt history to look at. It could have been helpful if there were names next to each picture. This book is fantastic for kids who are afraid of the dark and for those who loves an adventure. I like the riddle and wish there were more of it. Marcy and the Riddle of the Sphinx is the very definition of charming. I love that the story follows directly behind the previous rather than jumping through other ancestors first (it's cute to see Arthur as a dad!). The art is, of course, stunning! You can really tell that Todd-Stanton was a kid fond of the maps & cutaways that featured in books like Eloise (hard same, my dude, hard same). These addition, to me at least (with my big old 90's nostalgia glasses) give the story an old-school adventure feel in the best way. I can unequivocally say that small child Darcy would have loved this book with both hands (& large child Darcy does too).
