During Shakespeare’s lifetime, women did not have the same rights as men . It was believed that women were the property of their fathers or their husbands. Women were expected to be kind and gentle. Strength, power and ambition were considered male characteristics. Alonso is the King of Naples. He helped Antonio to get rid of Prospero and take his brother’s place as Duke of Milan. He has two children, a daughter called Claribel and a son, Ferdinand. His fleet of ships is returning to Naples from Tunis but they are caught in a huge storm. Travelling with him is his son, his brother and other nobles. They are all washed up on the island after the storm, although Alonso thinks Ferdinand has drowned. When Alonso finally meets Prospero, he apologises and makes him Duke of Milan again. When he is reunited with Ferdinand and finds out about his engagement to Prospero’s daughter Miranda, he is delighted. Prospero is a magician and the rightful Duke of Milan who has been banished to an island with his daughter, Miranda. Critic Jessica Slights creates claims that although many declare that Miranda only reflects the image of an obedient and subservient woman; she argues Miranda's character is independent. Miranda's upbringing shapes her character and the view of the world around her. She is not confined to social constructs as she did not grow up within a conventional society. This leads Miranda to view the world without preconceived ideas. Prospero is the main guardian in her life, but she developed personality traits such as kind-heartedness that are, as many describe, distinct in comparison to Prospero’s. In addition, she challenged the rules of traditional courtship when she pursued Ferdinand. Prospero can be seen as an authoritarian dictator. He has colonised and taken over Caliban’s island; he manipulates his daughter and her young suitor; he is cruel in his treatment of Caliban, and also Ferdinand, and keeps Ariel in a state of servitude by using draconian threats. He causes suffering to his enemies so that he can bring them together and judge them. No they haven’t! Whattayaknow! It was a magical storm, raised by the wizard Prospero, who used to be the Duke of Milan, until his brother Antonio, helped by Alonso, exiled him. And here he is, with his daughter Miranda, his magical spirit Ariel, and his nasty slave Caliban, who used to live on this island alone – until Prospero was marooned here. They used to get along, but – yeeeaah – Ferdinand and Miranda see each other and, as anticipated and directed by Prospero, they fall in love. The butler and the jester meet Prospero’s slave, Caliban, who believes he has a claim on the island, and together they plan to overthrow Prospero. Sycorax, a witch, was abandoned on the island and gave birth to a son, Caliban. When she died, he was left alone on the island with only the invisible spirits for company. When Prospero and Miranda arrive on the island, Caliban lives with them as part of the family but when Prospero catches him about to sexually assault Miranda, he throws Caliban out and treats him as a slave. Caliban wants revenge on Prospero but is afraid of his magical powers. When he meets Stephano, Caliban believes the drunken butler can kill Prospero and become a better master to him. He tries to lead Stephano to kill Prospero but Ariel and Prospero defeat his plans.In the 2023 dystopian novel The Ferryman by Justin Cronin, the setting is an archipelago named Prospera. Prospero's speeches are quoted several times throughout the novel. One of the moons of Uranus is named after her, in keeping with other Uranian moons named after Shakespearian characters.

Prospero reads a lot and is very knowledgeable. He has taught himself to use magic and control nature.The 1998 TV movie The Tempest, set in a Mississippi bayou during the American Civil War, based on Shakespeare's play and starring Peter Fonda as "Gideon Prosper", a Prospero-esque plantation owner who has learned voodoo from his slaves. Prospero controls Ariel and Caliban. He is protective of his daughter Miranda and tries to control her actions on the island. The play is about Prospero, a magician who was the Duke of Milan. He was then betrayed by his brother, Antonio, and the King of Naples. He now lives on an island with his daughter Miranda. Trinculo does not have a very high opinion of either his own intelligence or that of Caliban and Stephano.We think of Prospero as a wise, compassionate man, using his magical powers to eventually bring about forgiveness and redemption, but he has only arrived at that point after overcoming his weaknesses. Even in the last stages, he is a control freak and a manipulator. In his early life, he was a weak leader, contemptuous of the role he was expected to play, and therefore deserving of his political downfall, although that does not excuse his brother’s actions. The following activity is a great way to introduce the characters and ideas from the play for the first time. The Tempest's second scene begins with Miranda, begging her father to spare the lives of the men at sea. She's fully aware of the powers Prospero possesses and begs him to cease the storm. In an act of bravery she challenges her father's wisdom, arguing that: "Had I been any god of power, I would / Have sunk the sea within the earth or ere / It should the good ship so have swallow'd and / The fraughting souls within her." [2] As the scene progresses it is revealed to her that she is, in fact, the high ranking daughter of the Duke of Milan. King of Naples and father of Ferdinand. Alonso aided Antonio in unseating Prospero as Duke of Milan twelve years before. As he appears in the play, however, he is acutely aware of the consequences of all his actions. He blames his decision to marry his daughter to the Prince of Tunis on the apparent death of his son. In addition, after the magical banquet, he regrets his role in the usurping of Prospero. Antonio Miranda has a close relationship with her father, although they do sometimes disagree and Miranda does disobey him at times. Their isolation on the island means that her father has a strong influence over her life as both her parent and her teacher.
