Obviously there is some difference here due to the Sigma being wide open at F/1.4 and the Canon being wide open at F/1.8. Looking at the 100% crops below and you will see that the Sigma is clean and sharp, while the Canon is hazy and barely useable. This set of three images of defocused fairy lights were shot at f/1.4, f/2 and f/2.8. They show minimal ‘onion ring’ effect and that the 11-blade aperture diaphragm remains well-rounded when stopping down a little. See my Nikon Z 50mm f1.8S review.Normally here we would have a test to see if you could tell the difference, but given how the Sigma is so clearly better in every way, it would be pointless. Instead, here are some more sample shots from the two lenses for you to compare. So optically the Sigma is definitely superior, but obviously it’s also larger, heavier and roughly double the price. I’d say it’s worth it if you can afford it and don’t mind accommodating the heft – and if it helps you justify the price, remember another advantage of the Sigma is being able to pay to switch mounts should you swap camera systems in the future, thereby protecting your investment. Oh and it comes with a lens hood too.

At the fastest apertures, the EF lens displays the worst chromatic aberration of the three in the form of severe purple fringing. There are traces of green and purple fringing from the RF and Sigma lenses but it isn’t nearly as evident. Closest focus distance of the Sigma is 0.38m (1.2ft.) in manual focus with a magnification of 1:5.4. The Z-Nikkor yields 1:6.0 at the same distance while the others offer a maximum magnification of around 1:6.5 at 0.45 to 0.5m distance. The Sigma achieves a magnification of 1:10 at 0.61m distance. [0] in our day and age i see no reason to even consider a manual focus lens unless you are on a ridiculously tight budget or you prefer to do things the hard way.

The focus rings of the Sigma and EF lens are somewhat stiffer than that of the RF lens but all three are pleasant and accurate to use. Because the Sigma and RF lens have wider focus rings, they are a little easier to turn than the thin ring of the EF lens.

The Nikkor 58mm f1.4G is Nikon’s flagship standard lens for its DSLRs, yet it missed out on our top award in my review because its performance in the APS-C/DX and the full-frame/FX corner was a bit of a let-down for this price. As you can see in my review comparing the Sigma to this lens, the APS-C/DX corner of the Sigma is also a bit weaker than one could have hoped for but in the FX-corner the Sigma clearly prevails. The Nikon 58/1.4G generally has less loCA but compared to the Sigma suffers a bit from focus-shift and the resulting coloration plus astigmatism. Regarding coma both lenses are on the same pretty good level. The Sigma has the advantage in focus speed: 0.6 vs. 0.8 seconds. Optics: All the modern designs since 2013 are pretty complex at 12 to 13 elements in 8 to 10 groups and employ aspherical elements. Only the F-Nikkor (8 elements in 7 groups) and the Canon (7/6) are much simpler designs but even the Canon employs an aspherical element. [+] At the fastest apertures up until f/2, the RF lens is clearly sharper than the EF lens and marginally sharper than the Sigma. Fastest apertures f/1.8 f/2When you also consider Sigma offers a service (paid) to switch mounts should you swap camera systems in the future, there really isn’t any reason not to get the 50mm Art if you can afford it. Once again it offers a step-up from the cheaper models and was also preferable to Canon and Nikon’s premium standard lenses in our tests. The only downsides are greater longitudinal chromatic aberrations than the more expensive rivals and the fact the body isn’t weather-sealed.

But there are other 50/1.4 lenses to be had. So does the performance of the Sigma 50mm f1.4 ART match the corresponding mark-up in price, and what if you’re considering the Zeiss Otus, the most expensive ‘standard’ lens on the market? Let me go through all alternatives step-by-step. The blue column represents readings from the centre of the picture frame at the various apertures and the green is from the edges. Averaging them out gives the red weighted column. When, by most reports, this lens optically outperforms anything but a Zeiss Otus, and you don't see anything special about one particular set of samples, I suggest you look for other samples and/or use a better monitor. Lateral chromatic aberration is entirely negligible throughout the entire aperture range, even out at the edges and corners of the image frame. Axial chromatic aberration or ‘bokeh fringing’ is often problematic at very wide apertures with fast lenses, but it’s very minimal in this case.

The first test scene of the day was a nice dandelion in some shade. In this scene, I specifically was looking for bokeh and sharpness. Before I tell you my thoughts on how they compare, take a look at the two shots yourself. Which one is which? Price: The Sigma (690 EUR / 950 USD) is more expensive than the 50mm f1.4 lenses from Nikon (410 EUR/USD) and Canon (300 EUR / 350 USD w/o lens hood) or the Z-Nikkor (360 EUR / 600 USD). But the Sigma is comfortably cheaper than the Sony (1500 EUR/USD) and especially the Zeiss (3200 EUR / 3600 USD).
