About this deal

The flashes are bright, but harmless to your eyes. However, they can get a bit irritating. Try not to look directly at them. To help, use the Bare+ in a well-lit room (this lessens the glare), and wear sunglasses if it’s too much. But don’t worry. You don’t need protective goggles! Mostly warm, sometimes hot – but always bearable.

Built-in skin sensors and UV protection to keep you safe. SmoothSkin Bare+ works best on light skin tones with dark hair The Bare+ is very fast. To start the flashes come fast and you can simply glide the device over your skin. However, after a minute or so as the Bare+ heats up, and so the flashes slow down. It’s still fast and personally I don’t mind that because I find the pace ideal to concentrate and get good, accurate coverage. And you’re done before you can get bored or tired anyway. Using this once a week has changed as that. Four minutes per leg. with minimal to no discomfort. Treating at a steady pace I don’t forget where I’ve treated and the heat doesn’t build up so it’s not sore. At most some minimal discomfort but again that’s if I rushed it. It's cleared for use on the whole body — underarms, legs, bikini line, and even face — and all you have to do is press a single button to activate it, so it's super simple to use. The directions advise to use it on clean skin and that all visible hair should be removed through shaving prior to treating the area — this is very different from professional laser hair removal, which requires there to be short, visible stubble on the area. Once you plug it in, the device automatically powers on, and you're ready to go. To use it, you lightly press it against the area you want to treat and press the button. The device has a smart sensor and only allows you to activate the IPL if it registers a compatible surface and skin tone, which is made clear by the button turning from red to blue. Even if you press the button without the device giving you the OK, it won't work. IPL machines are best suited for people with fair skin and dark hair because of the clear difference in pigmentation, but the Philips Lumea Prestige is miles ahead for those with darker skin.

There are no dials or buttons to select an intensity level. That’s because it has just one medium power intensity level of 4 J/cm 2. There’s not even a power button. Just plug it in and it powers on. Position it on your skin and press the large flash button with the rose-gold ribbon running through the middle. It’s that simple. One large flash button. That’s it. Yes. The Bare is clinically tested and proven safe and effective for home use. It adheres to the relevant European and International electronic and manufacturing standards too. It has CE conformity and has extra reassurance of FDA-clearance.

I did find a way around this (not recommended) which was a little more effort and mess than I would have liked but it definitely worked. The SmoothSkin Bare+ is a small, handheld device just larger than my palm. It uses 100 IPL — which stands for intense pulsed light — flashes per minute to target body hair, reducing its growth over time to reveal smooth skin. (Technically speaking, IPL is not the same as a laser treatment, which uses single-spectrum light to emit a specific wavelength.) My first time using an IPL device and I’m so happy with the results! Noticed a difference on the hair growth on my legs within approximately 5 weeks, my hair doesn’t grow as fast now and the device is so easy to use it takes no time at all. Very convenient, I would recommend this device for anyone looking to start their laser hair journey! Cover-up and avoid tanning and sun exposure after your session. If you don’t there’s a higher risk you’ll experience the rare home IPL side effects. Effort & resultsUnlimited flashes. You can also use it almost anywhere: on the bikini line, face, legs, arms, bum, tum and more Four weeks in and there is a gradual reduction of hairs, the first sign that it’s working. I’ve also noticed that when you use a gentle exfoliating product even more hair disappears. As weeks go by there’s a tangible reduction of hair, not all gone by any means, but skin is smoother to the touch. OFF ON A BRIEF TANGENT

When I did need to treat my bikini area (and I mean the WHOLE area) I struggled big-time. As I have olive skin the area around those bits was a little too dark and the sensor wasn’t happy to release the flash. First, you must read the user guide, full manual and do a skin sensitivity test. The simplified 9 step user guide As far as I’m concerned, if it doesn’t hurt then it doesn’t work. But on some parts of my bikini area, I had to drop the setting down to 3, as 5 was far too strong – something I could only ever dream about with a DIY machine. That’s not as fast as Smoothskin suggest. This is likely because, as our testers found, awkward and bony areas slow you down a bit. Also, the flash rate slowed a bit after a few minutes too. That’s because the Bare+ heats up and needs a little longer to recharge in-between flashes. When you shop via my links I earn a small commission (but your price stays the same). And I really appreciate your support🙏! Firstly, if you have a darker skin tone (types IV or V) you can use only lower, safe intensity levels. Therefore, the Bare is perfectly suited to you.

TIP: Smoothskin suggest you zap more stubborn hair such as bikini and underarms up to 3 times in one session. The skin sensor will stop the device if it’s not safe to flash any area because the skin tone is too dark or it’s not laying flat enough Switch to Glide Mode for continuous flashes as you work over large areas or Stamp Mode for small areas like bikini. I paid a lot of money for this device so I'm really hoping they come through with their 2 year warranty. The product comes in a very luxurious box, it's quite compact and looks high quality. The instructions are clear and it's easy to use.John Lewis plc, registered office: 171 Victoria Street, London SW1E 5NN. That’s not to say the lower levels don’t work. They do. But, studies show they can take longer to get to smooth. And then more regular sessions to stay that way versus using a higher, but still safe, intensity level. After your treatments, you should cover up and use a sunscreen of SPF 15+ to avoid unprotected sun exposure I’ve been using their hair remover light treatment for the past 13 weeks. It’s honestly been a game changer for me I’m 47 years old and I never realised how much of a burden, shaving or waxing my legs was. The ‘feather light’ setting is practically pointless, I couldn’t feel a thing from the flash and knew it would not work.
