About this deal

Do not go near windows. It’s not the tornado itself that causes most injuries; it’s the flying debris—or the windows they crash through—that cause most injuries. The reading level/plot/characterization--a great fit together. This is an early chapter book that will hold young readers' interest with a great story and memorable characters (not least of which is the dog, Tornado). It's not going to feel too "young" for older new readers, but it will still be understandable for young new readers. Tornado Evolution-Describes the different Variants in the RAF IDS (InterDictor Strike), ADV (Air Defence Variant). Nichol tells his own story of having to eject from a Tornado after the one he was navigating with pilot, John Peters, was hit by a shoulder-launched SA-14 surface-to-air missile over Iraq. They, like others, were captured by the Iraqis and tortured. The book veers to this many times. The Tornados themselves were built to fly low and deliver a devastating payload but Saddam’s anti-aircraft missiles actually did a lot of the devastating it seems. Have an emergency safety plan. If you live in a trailer or mobile home, make sure you know where to go to evacuate.

The premise of this book gets big points for originality: Lexington Willow is orphaned as a toddler by a tornado, literally blowing into the life of elephant Nyah, who protects and comforts the little girl in the storm and forms a mysterious connection with her. The wind is also a character in the book, hanging around long after the tornado. It knows things Lex doesn’t, and sometimes whispers to her. Betsy Byars was an American author of children's books. She wrote over sixty books for young people. Her first novel was published in 1962. Her novel Summer of the Swans won the 1971 Newbery Medal. She also received a National Book Award for Young People's Literature for The Night Swimmers and an Edgar Award for Wanted ... Mud Blossom!!One of the best tornado books set in Tornado Alley, The Mercy of the Sky is an emotionally draining but exceptionally enthralling novel by Holly Bailey. Winner of the Oklahoma Book and American Meteorological Society’s awards, Bailey combines incredible research with immense storytelling, returning to her hometown after the worst twister on record ravaged it. Former Tornado Navigator John Nichol tells the incredible story of the RAF Tornado force during the First Gulf War in 1991; the excitement and the danger, the fear and the losses. It is an extraordinary account of courage and fortitude. Storm chasing is one of the most dangerous aspects of natural science study, with those who engage in it being some of the bravest individuals on the planet. In The Man Who Caught the Storm, author Brantley Hargrove chronicles the life and times of Tim Samaras. Having never attended college in his life, Samaras chased storms with the brilliant tools he invented himself.

Fantastic book. Written by a man with first hand experience of the Gulf War and who was captured by the enemy. An elephant never forgets, but Lexington Willow can't remember her past. Swept away by a tornado as a toddler, she was dropped in a nearby Nebraska zoo, where an elephant named Nyah protected her from the storm. With no trace of her family, Lex grew up at the zoo with her foster father, Roger; her best friend, Fisher; and the wind whispering in her ear. Where to Find Us The older I get, the more fascinated I am with family history and the way certain traits or talents get passed down – or not. Unfortunately, we don’t always know much about our own ancestors. Maybe that’s why I appreciate a multigenerational story that shows all the forms a young person’s “inheritance” can take, whether money, looks, a special skill or talent, or even a disease. And because I’ve always loved a good mystery, I enjoy books where a young person seeks to uncover a family secret. Finally, now that I’m on the older side of the generations, I appreciate a book that portrays older family members realistically and with respect. I'm the wrong reader for this book, I don't like reading about how the Iraqis tortured aircrew, I really just want to read about flying, I also didn't like the hyperbole about the Tornado, it's never been one of my favorites. Read here why the Tornado was a mistake:It seems to contain all other possible fantasy books within itself. There are monsters and quests and magicians and cancelled utopias and twisted fairytale romances. Bluebear rushes from one exploit to another, most of them potentially lethal, all of them amusing, and meets a host of peculiar, garrulous, friendly, treacherous beings. His bravery led to discoveries meteorologists once thought impossible to capture, though he would tragically meet his match when facing off against the largest tornado ever recorded. Capturing the triumph and tragedy of Samaras’ life, Hargrove’s thrilling debut novel beautifully details the thrill of the chase and the extremes of the natural world. The Mercy Of The Sky: The Story Of A Tornado – Holly Bailey This is the story of the aircrew at the heart of Operation Desert Storm, almost none of whom had any prior experience of armed combat. It is the story of the Tornado’s missions, of those who did not return - and of the families who watched and waited as one of the most complex conflicts in recent history unfolded live on television. What Stands In A Storm: Three Days In The Worst Superstorm To Hit The South’s Tornado Alley – Kim Cross In Illuminary, the main character Kamryn finds herself in the land of Ur after falling down a staircase. I felt an immediate kinship—fellow klutzes, unite! This contemporary adventure blends elements of well-known fairytales (like Peter Pan) with a unique, fantastical world. For me, characters really make the story come alive, and this story was no different. Ur held wonderful side characters, as well as a villain that’s easy to hate.

I’m left with the utmost respect for the men who flew these planes during Gulf War 1, on which this story is mostly centred, but also the impact their work has on the families left behind hoping & praying for their safe return.Whether you read it as an adult or with a child, before or after you have seen the movie multiple times, you can marvel at how Dorothy and all the characters (and there are many more in the books than in the movie) inspire the readers by overcoming adversity. This is the story of the aircrew at the heart of Operation Desert Storm, almost none of whom had any prior experience of armed combat. It is the story of the Tornado’s missions, of those who did not return - and of the families who watched and waited as one of the most complex conflicts in recent history unfolded live on television. It is a story of untold fear and suffering, and astounding courage in the face of hitherto unimaginable adversity. I am the mother of six and a voracious journaler. I am also a novelist. Though I’ve found that the facts of family adventures are often more fascinating than fiction. I bring in-the-moment observations as well as decade-seasoned insights to the world of family life. I also love reading about other families with all their quirks and joys.
