For all its hilarity and taboo inducing high jinks, The Wolf of Wall Street does slow down in its final hour to find genuine darkness in Jordan Belfort’s story. As his marriage falls apart and the wolves begin to scratch at the door, a sense of bleakness helps to balance out the final, sputtering sparks of comedy. Watching it again, the ending felt even more disheartening and existentially hollow than Goodfellas, showing that while Scorsese’s film very well might be his funniest, it can also stand up as one of his grittiest explorations of masculine ambition, hubris and the temptations that can snare and destroy. The Dolby Vision/HDR10 component of The Wolf of Wall Street certainly added something to the video quality. In previous HD renders you definitely don’t get such a wide range of contrast or depth in the shadow areas. Take for example the image of Belfort standing with his first wife Leah outside of Trump Tower. There is a dominant gold color that can be hard to replicate on screen and shadow areas behind the glass windows that easily jam up in HD quality. HDR can fill in those shadows with more color value because of the gain in bit depth. Plus, with 4x the resolution of 1080×1920 (HD), 2160×3840 (UHD) opens up the image for more detail. The only real benefit to “upgrading” to this 4K edition is, you guessed it, the picture quality. I recently rewatched the movie on Blu-ray (had I known a 4K version was on the horizon, I’d have waited) so this gave me the perfect opportunity to do a little comparison. First off, there’s not a night and day difference. There usually never is between a new film between its Blu-ray and 4K counterparts. But there were instances in which the HDR did make a lasting impression. Tiny nuances like the texture of suits, the deeper colors which gave the actors more of a “bronz’ish” look. Detail has been improved, albeit slightly. And that’s the thing with 4K releases. Unless it’s something that’s in dire need of an upgrade, you really have to look for what’s improved and what might just be a placebo effect. The question you have to ask is – is it worth it to you? Audio: How’s it sound? The other place you see the advantage to HDR is in the high office buildings where the sky can blow out when viewed on inferior screens and from inferior media. You can see more detail in the skylines and on the trading floors. And, how about the infamous scene where Belfort’s second wife Naomi is teasing him in their daughter’s bedroom? The magenta dress she is wearing gains some boost with HDR as well as their daughter’s toys strewn about the floor (previous renders look less saturated and a bit more flat). The Wolf of Wall Street is presented in 2160p 4k Ultra High-Definition Widescreen 2.39:1 featuring HDR10 and Dolby Vision. Paramount’s re-release of this title for UHD features an exceptionally pleasing 4k transfer, with the Dolby Vision particularly offering a crisp and clear image with fine detail. The dynamic metadata ensures perfect levels in each scene, providing very bright and vivid colors, one of the most noticeable differences between this and the Blu-ray release, as well as the deep darks in some of the darker sequences that demonstrate the best that HDR and Dolby Vision have to offer. AudioThe Wolf of Wall Street Roundtable– Essentially DiCaprio doing a lot of talking and Scorsese doing a lot of nodding while referring to the making of the film. Also, Stephen has reviewed Tony Scott’s True Romance as newly-released on 4K Ultra HD by Arrow Video, a UK import title that’s also apparently a pretty great remaster and worth considering. The audio is offered in DTS-HD Master Audio in 5.1 channels, with subtitles in English SDH and French.

Running Wild (HD; 11:20) is another archival piece with some nice behind the scenes footage and more interviews.

The Wolf of Wall Street marked the fifth collaboration betweenScorsese and DiCaprio (three more are reportedly in the works), and it's unquestionably their finest effort to date...the perfect marriage of director and project, actor and role. Here, they bring out each other's best, and their symbiotic relationship makes the film's engine purr. The Wolf of Wall Street always will be controversial and will surely spark some spirited debate. It's the type of film you either love or loathe, but whatever your opinion, its artistic merit remains undeniable. It may not be a masterpiece, but it's certainly a masterwork by one of the finest craftsmen in Hollywood history and contains arguably the best performance by one of the greatest actors of our generation. organic texture to things without ever tipping over into a noisy appearance. While detail levels are uniformly high throughout, as I mentioned in my A caption reads: Academy Award nominee Leonardo Di Caprio. Academy Award nominee Jonah Hill and Matthew McConaughey Of all of Scorsese’s films, I’d heard that The Wolf of Wall Street was the one that most closely resembled GoodFellas (my personal favorite Scorsese film). In a way, it does. I can see where the movie would polarize audiences. I’d heard that people hated it and others that loved it. I’m one of the latter. There were times when I was laughing so hard, I literally had to pause the movie to catch my breath. The first time Jordan meets Donnie. The extended discussion about the midget-tossing scene in the boardroom. The scene where Donnie ad Jordan take Quaaludes. I was crying! Now what’s really strange is that I heard everything in the movie was true. If it was in the film, it happened. The performances in the movie were flat out amazing. If Leonardo DiCaprio was good, Jonah Hill was nearly his equal. Odd to think that Jonah Hill has half the Academy Award nominations that DiCaprio has. At three hours, the film is quite an investment, but I simply couldn’t get enough. This is truly Scorsese and DiCaprio’s most crowning achievement and it’s one that I’ll watch a couple times a year. Highly recommended. Video: How’s it look? been worried, but as some other comments by Christie get into (as well as ancillary information imparted in some of the many other bonus features

containing a glut of new writing on the film, a kind of funny luxury "wallet" that has a (pretend) American Express credit card, a business card and a ostensible "tv broadcast" to "real life", with the aspect ratio widening and a crosshatched overlay courtesy of the supposed broadcast disappearing. Jordan Belfort’s journey in this film isn’t one that should be admired or celebrated. He did some despicable things in his life, and ruined the lives of a lot of other people in the process. The Wolf of Wall Street is comparable to seeing a car crash. It’s something you can’t look away from no matter how grisly the scene becomes. Watching this film can definitely turn your stomach at times, but it also serves as a cautionary tale in doing what it takes to get to the top. The story benefits largely thanks to such a great cast of characters, Leonardo DiCaprio especially, as well as Margot Robbie and Jonah Hill, who flourish under the direction of Scorsese.
